Charmed, Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

Bailey is sticking to her guns on Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 Episode 3, “Reunited.”

It’s understandable, I think, but it’s starting to feel a little out of character for Bailey. Firing Meredith, Alex, and Richard was one thing, but she’s acting personally offended by the entire situation rather than being supportive.

And yes, Bailey’s always been tough, but there’s more going on here, and it feels off.

She won’t approve Meredith having privileges for the one surgery, but she does allow her to video conference in to watch — a smart idea by Jo that’s pretty fun to watch. Meredith being out of the hospital is offering so many ways for us to see her differently, and that’s something I enjoy.

But I’m not sure I believe that Bailey would be so angry as to hang up on Meredith when she does.

Firing Qadri feels over the top for a moment, but Quadry does cross a line in the way she talks to Bailey. Even still, she does make a point. What’s interesting is that it’s another reminder of how far Meredith has come. This is now a hospital where interns come to work with THE Meredith Grey, and that’s pretty remarkable.

All of this has offered an opportunity for Jo to shine, which is nice to watch. She’s great when she’s being a badass, and satisfying to see her succeed in that surgery while needing very little help from Meredith after all.

She’s followed in Meredith’s footsteps in so many ways, so this is fitting. Heck, even her character’s introduction was similar to Meredith’s on the pilot.

What’s less interesting on this episode, unfortunately, is the Charmed reunion. As much as I appreciate the “cast from the past” concept and the details — Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano play sisters, there’s a third sister, and all of their names even start with the same letter — it feels a little more like a gimmick than anything else.

It’s fine, and the message about family is a nice one, but it’s also a bit forced.

The situation does have an effect on Richard, though. It makes him want to connect while he still has the time, too. Unfortunately, Catherine isn’t answering the phone, and there’s someone else who wants to bond. This worries me a little, but… we’ll see where it goes.

As far as the patients go, I’m much more interested in the reconnection between Bert and Sooyoung. Just listening to their love story is powerful, and somehow it also feels really hopeful. The two of them have an effect on Maggie and Amelia in different ways.

For Amelia, it’s about being willing to go all-in with Link and the baby they have on the way, despite her fears. The first step is telling Meredith and DeLuca, and she just blurts it out when she sees no better way.

I have to say, I like the Amelia and Link pairing. For so long I wanted Amelia and Owen to make things work because they made so much sense together, and let’s not forget the interest Link had in Meredith. But Link has the potential to open up something new in Amelia’s character that feels really significant.

And, speaking of couples, Jackson has found a better match in Vic, and the chemistry the two have on screen is definitely palpable. It’s a great pairing, no matter how awkward Maggie feels about it.

Other thoughts:

  • DeLuca keeps making me love him more and more, and the teaching moment he has for Levi is just one more reason.
  • Nico’s support of Levi and pushing him to do better is such a small scene, but it’s really significant. I hope we see more of them together soon.
  • Tom has returned to being the worst, and it’s actually cringe-worthy to watch. The restraining order is so incredibly petty.
  • Owen encourages Teddy to go back to work while offering to stay home with the baby, and that’s an act of love if I’ve ever seen one. What a beautiful thing to see.
