Fans will say goodbye to two of Grey’s Anatomy’s long-time characters, Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman, at the end of Season 22. Both Kevin McKidd (Owen) and Kim Raver (Teddy) will be exiting Grey’s Anatomy after the season finale.

According to Deadline, both actors were informed they’d be leaving the series over a month ago. Their final episode is currently planned to be the Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 finale, which airs on May 7th.

Owen and Teddy have had a difficult time with their relationship over the past few seasons. Having just gotten a divorce, only to rekindle their romance once again, it will be interesting to see how the show writes their characters out.

“Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen- two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other. It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves,” Shonda Rhimes said in a statement.

Her statement suggests a satisfying end to their story, and it does seem fitting that they would exit the series together.

Presumably, this should also alleviate any concerns that either character could be killed off, as Grey’s Anatomy is known to do in shocking ways.

Kevin McKidd first joined Grey’s Anatomy as Owen Hunt in Season 5. He arrived on screen just in time to pull an icicle out of Cristina Yang, and has been a significant part of the series ever since.

“18 seasons. 18 years. That’s a fair stretch of a man’s life. I came over just hoping to get a shot… and somehow found a home. A family. A place that’s shaped me more than I probably realise yet,” McKidd stated in a post on Instagram.

“Playing Owen Hunt has been one of the great privileges of my career, in front of the camera and behind it. I’m deeply grateful to @shondarhimes for trusting me with him.” (Read McKidd’s full post here.)

Kim Raver first joined the series in Season 6, exiting at the end of Season 8. She then returned briefly in Season 14 and returns as a series regular in Season 15. “Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart,” Raver said in a post on Instagram.

“Sixteen years ago, I had the incredible privilege of stepping into this role thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers. Since that day, it has been a true gift to bring the iconic words of Shonda and our brilliant team of writers to life.” (Read Raver’s full post here.)

Ultimately, McKidd and Raver’s exits seem to be a creative decision. There is no news yet on a renewal for Season 23.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10/9c.
