Supergirl: 8 Things We Know about Season 5
Supergirl will return for a fifth season to fight for truth, justice, and the American way in less than a week.
Season 4 left a lot of questions to be answered. Will Kara be able to mend her friendship with Lena? What did the Monitor do to Lex? What is Leviathan, and what does it want with Eve? Who is J’onn’s brother, and why does he want to seek revenge against J’onn?
To better prepare for the new season and to ease our minds regarding all of those questions, we thought it would be beneficial to share 8 things we do know about Supergirl Season 5.
1. A New Suit

All of the footage from the new season puts some focus on Kara’s new suit. It has pants. PANTS.
Now Supergirl can high kick alien-hating, big bads in the face without an issue. Sure, her old suit has the faintest tights, but there’s no argument against this suit being much more practical. In the newest trailer, Brainy says the new-and-improved suit materializes, which only makes it cooler.
Melissa Benoist told Entertainment Weekly the new suit reflects how Kara has grown over the course of the series. Benoist said, “I just think it’s more adult.”
2. Mehcad Brooks to Exit

The longtime friend of Clark Kent, renowned photojournalist, and CEO of CatCo Media, James Olsen is leaving Supergirl in the early part of the new season, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. The specificities regarding Jimmy’s exit from National City are still unknown
Mehcad Brooks is leaving the show on his own accord to focus on other endeavors, like other film and television projects and his music career.
A statement by the showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller suggests the door is always open for Mehcad to return:
“We love Mehcad and we’re sad to see him leave the show as a series regular, but we’re excited for both Mehcad and James Olsen’s future. He’ll always be a part of our Supergirl family and we look forward to James returning to National City at some point to visit his sister and his super friends.”
3. Jeremy Jordan to Return

After departing the show at the end of its third season, Jeremy Jordan will return to Supergirl in the latter half of the fifth season, as exclusively reported by Entertainment Tonight.
Kara Danvers’s tech-savy best friend Winn Schott will make his return to National City after the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover in December. He will appear in three episodes.
4. Lead Up to a Crisis

The “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover is on everyone’s minds as we prepare for new seasons of all our favorite Arrowverse shows. Supergirl will start the crossover on December 8, 2019.
Season 4 ended with hints of what will come in the new season of Supergirl as well as in the crossover event. The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) brought J’onn Jonzz’s brother to presumably National City to avenge himself. The Monitor didn’t stop there; he also revived Lex Luthor on Supergirl Season 4 Episode 22, “The Quest for Peace.”
The Monitor’s actions on the Supergirl Season 4 finale will likely have effects on the upcoming season and the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover.
5. Leviathan

It was revealed at SDCC that John Cryer will return as Lex Luthor in the fifth season, but he isn’t the only villain Supergirl will have to battle in Season 5. It seems like Leviathan will loom over National City.
The Hollywood Reporter did some digging and found out what Leviathan means in terms of DC comics. Leviathan, as in Michael Bendis’Action Comics, is an organization that takes out intelligence agencies. Leviathan does so without being seen or heard.
This correlates with what the woman told Eve in the Season 4 finale: “Leviathan is everywhere. Leviathan is everyone. And Leviathan is coming.”
6. Kara and Lena’s Friendship Will Be Tested

Last season ended with Lena learning the truth about Kara’s secret identity, which is sure to drive a wedge between the best friends. The trailers for the Season 5 suggests that Lena isn’t going to take the revelation lightly.
Melissa Benoist described season 5 as “…a fight for Lena’s soul,” to Entertainment Weekly. It isn’t shocking that Kara will do anything to save her friend from leaning too far to the dark side.
7. New Characters

A new season comes with new characters, and there have been quite a few new, recurring characters announced for Season 5.
Variety exclusively reported that Jennifer Cheon Garcia (Arrow & The 100) will appear in the season premiere of Supergirl as Midnight, who has been “described as the physical manifestation of darkness.” Midnight is seeking revenge against someone who wronged her.
Kate Micucci (Garfunkel and Oates) will also make a cameo in the season 5 premiere, according to TVLine.
Julie Gonzalo (Veronica Mars) will also have a series-regular role in the new season as Andrea Rojas, who will take over for Jimmy Olsen.
8. New Series Regulars

A couple of the characters that were introduced last season will join Season 5 as series regulars. TVLine reported that Azie Tesafi (Kelly Olsen) and Andrea Brooks (Eve Teschmacher) will return to Supergirl as series regulars.
