We’re getting ready for the fall season to start here at Tell-Tale TV, but there are also new shows far into the future that have caught our attention. 

This week, our TV News Wrap-Up looks at creators being honored, shows that are returning from a long absence, new shows that have been ordered, and lots of casting news.

The Ginny & Georgia book series is getting a Netflix adaptation. Deadline reports that the streamer has ordered 10 episodes of the series. The show follows, “…angsty and awkward fifteen-year-old Ginny Miller who often feels more mature than her thirty-year-old mother, the irresistible and dynamic Georgia Miller.” After years on the run the pair settle down into a new city, but connections from Georgia’s past threaten their new life. The title role of Ginny will be played by Antonia Gentry (Candy Jar) and Georgia will be played by Brianne Howey (The Passage). Production is underway in Toronto and the series is set to premiere in 2020.

NBC has upped the Good Girls Season 3 episode order. According to TV Line, the network has increased the order for the third season to 16 episodes. That’s up from 13 in Season 2 and 10 in Season 1. Good Girls is set to premiere mid-season wth a new co-conspirator in the form of a graphic designer. Back in June, Jenna Bans teased that the new addition might also be a suburban mom with a questionable past.

GLAAD is honoring the creator of Schitt’s Creek, Dan Levy, with the Davidson/Valenti Award. A Deadline exclusive reports, that the award is given to an LGBTQ media professional for promoting acceptance in the LGBTQ community. “By featuring and celebrating a pansexual character, Dan and Schitt’s Creek are expanding representation of the spectrum of identities within the LGBTQ community in a way that other content creators should model. Dan has been such a powerful advocate throughout his career, and continues to use his platform to uplift and inspire LGBTQ youth,” says Sarah Kate Ellis, President, and CEO of GLAAD.

Piper Perabo has joined the cast of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful prequel City of Angels. TV Line reports that Perabo will recur as Linda Craft, wife of Penny Dreadful’s Dr. Peter Craft, who is bored with her suburban life. Perabo joins a star-studded cast including Danny Zovato (Fear the Walking Dead), Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), Kerry Bishé and Nathan Lane (Halt and Catch Fire). Production on the series will begin later this month.

Jason Ritter is set to recur on A Million Little Things Season 2. Details about his character are being kept under wraps, but it was teased that Ritter will play someone with ties to Maggie’s mother, Patrica’s past, and his appearance will shake things up. The Crown Season 3 finally has a November premiere date. Netflix announced on Monday that the drama detailing the life of Queen Elizabeth II would drop its third season on November 17th. The new season which spans 1964 to 1977 prompted a recast of several roles. Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (Broadchurch) will succeed Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II while Matt Smith will be handing the role of Prince Philip to Tobias Menzies (Outlander). Season 3 will also feature Ben Daniels (The Exorcist) and Helena Bonham Carter. While fans eagerly await Season 3, The Crown Season 4 is already set to begin production later this year which is rumored to be set in the 80s.

Siren Season 3 is getting a new mermaid. Tiffany Londsdale is set as a new mermaid for the Freeform series upcoming third season. According to Deadline, “Lonsdale will play Tia, an extremely intelligent mermaid with a highly evolved knowledge of the human condition. She speaks several languages, understands advanced science and technology and was trained as a high-level warrior.” Londsdale has guest-starred on CBS’s S.W.A.T. and was a regular on Syfy’s Ascension

Peaky Blinders Season 5 finally has a premiere date on Netflix. According to Deadline, the British drama will premiere August 25th in the U.K, and drop on Netflix at 12:01 PT on Friday, October 4th. Fans of the drama have eagerly been awaiting its return since Season 4 premiered almost two years ago. It’s the highest-rated season of the series yet. A teaser trailer dropped for the series back in July and has garnered 3.5 million views since it’s unveiling. Peaky Blinders also won its first BAFTA for Best TV Drama in 2018, a rarity for shows that many years along.  Check out the trailer for the upcoming fifth season here.

A St. Elmo’s Fire television is being eyed by NBC. According to TV Line, the network is working on a close adaptation of teh 1985 coming-of-age film, and “will focus on a group of close friends struggling with their careers, commitment and the responsibilities of adulthood.” Josh Berman (Drop Dead Diva) is attached to write and executive produce the potential series.

Amazon’s The Wheel of Time series has added five actors to the cast. Variety reports, “Josha Stradowski has been cast in the role of Rand al’Thor, with Marcus Rutherford set to play Perrin Aybara and Zoë Robins playing Nynaeve. In addition, Barney Harris will play Mat Cauthon and Madeleine Madden will play Egwene Al’Vere. They join previously announced cast member Rosamund Pike.” The series, based on a high fantasy novel is set in a world in which magic exists but only certain women are allowed to use it. 

Syfy cancels Krypton after two seasons. TV Line reports that Syfy has canceled the series not 48 hours after the sophomore finale aired. The network also passed on the Lobo spinoff after ordering a pilot in June. Krypton producer Warner Horizon intends to shop the series around to other outlets. Over the course of the show’s second season it “averaged barely 400,000 total weekly viewers and just over a 0.1 demo rating in Live+Same Day numbers — or about half of what it did during its freshman run.

CBS has canceled Instinct after two seasons. Series creator Michael Rauch explained that the finale will air Sunday August 25th. Instinct follows Dylan Reinhart (Alan Cumming), a former CIA operative turned author and university professor who consults with a NYPD detective Lizzie Needham (Bojana Novakovic). According to TV Line, “Instinct has been averaging 3.4 million total viewers and just over a 0.3 demo rating — or exactly half of what its freshman run did (airing mostly in-season). Among all original CBS summertime fare, it ranks a firm last in the demo, trailing even NCIS: The Cases They Can’t Forget and something called Whistleblower. Only the network’s Sunday-night Good Fight ‘reruns’ rate lower, with a 0.25.”
