Killjoys Review: Three Mutineers (Season 5 Episode 6)
If you thought the shock of Aneela being alive was the end of the Aneela-related surprises, Killjoys Season 5 Episode 6, “Three Mutineers,” proves you wrong. She’s still Hullen.
It’s been awhile since we’ve heard the h-word, and it’s a little weird to have the Hullen back in play. This could mean that the Hullen could rise again, or at least some people could be turned Hullen if they choose (i.e. Delle Seyah).
This is a fun little mystery to have floating in the background. It doesn’t need to be answered immediately, but at some point we will need answers. The big question is, if the green was destroyed, how is Aneela still Hullen?

It’s a lot of fun seeing Aneela trying to navigate the world without her ship and crew of people to do whatever she says. She’s a fish out of water, but she gets by just fine with the help of her family.
It would’ve been nice to get a solo scene between Jaq and Aneela, maybe even a heart to heart as Jaq tries to get to know her a bit better. Unfortunately, there’s a universe to save, so that chat will have to wait.
We do get a couple snippets from conversations between Jaq and Aneela. Jaq bringing up a con that “Uncle Johnny” told him about, for instance, is sweet and hilarious. Also, the fact that both Delle Seyah and Aneela answer to mom makes my heart happy.
Aneela: I promised you an empire, remember?
Delle Seyah: I guess we better hurry up and save the universe together. Tick tock.
The fact that Jaq gets locked away is disappointing; it would’ve been great to see more of this family together. However, I can’t wait to see Delle Seyah and Aneela teaming up to save the world. What does one do while locked away in a mirror cube?
And then, there’s the reunion of Delle Seyah and Aneela. It’s not easy to snap back into the same dynamic they had when they were together, especially since Delle Seyah is no longer Hullen.
The “forest filth” line may be one of my absolutely favorite things Aneela has ever said. Hannah John-Kamen’s delivery is absolutely hilarious. Delle Seyah’s “carried a Jaqobis” retort is also top notch. All around this is simply an awesome exchange.
Aneela: Did you just throw forest filth at me?
Delle Seyah: Do you have any idea what I’ve been through? I suffered for you! I carried a Jaqobis for you! And I will not carry bags for you. I love you, Aneela, but you do not get to treat me like I’m less now that I’m human. No one is more queen than me.
Aneela: You haven’t changed. I thought I lost you.
Delle Seyah: Because I’m human?
Aneela: Because I’m not. I don’t care how others see me, but I don’t want to be a monster to you.
Delle Seyah: Aneela, I may be human, but I am still a really terrible person.
It’ll be interesting to see who Delle Seyah and Aneela run into first, our killjoys trio or our group down in Old Town. Regardless, everyone’s reactions to Aneela are sure to be fun to watch. Who do you want them to run into first?
If you need me, I’ll be over here sobbing over Dutch and Johnny.
It’s such a relief that the two of them finally sit down and talk things out. We got to live in the angst of them not being okay for a good bit of time, and so it is time that they talked things out.

I can’t think of another show that treats its friendships, its characters, with this level of care. Usually the romances are the ones that get all the special treatment, but that’s not the case here.
Killjoys recognizes that the core relationship is between Johnny and Dutch. Over the seasons, there has been so much thought into developing their relationship, creating their backstory, and showing how their relationship has evolved through the years.
We’re treated to callbacks that only make appearances when it’s emotionally satisfying — like “you’re my gravity” re-appearing on Killjoys Season 5 Episode 5, “A Bout, A Girl.” These callbacks aren’t gratouitus; every reference serves a purpose, and it’s usually to make you cry.
This time around, it’s the one year.
Johnny: You know, you were born to be a killjoy but maybe I wasn’t, and I was just afraid to say that to you because I might lose you.
Dutch: Johnny Jaqobis, I am proposing a one year.
Johnny: A what?
Dutch: When this is over, you are taking a killjoys sabbatical. I don’t know, travel, steal ships, I don’t know, dance. And if, in a year, you find something better, I am going to personally fire your ass, and you’re going to go to your farm, and you’re going to have your robot goats, and you are going to find someone to make sausages with, and you’re never going to lose me. Unless you give me the shitty guest bed, okay?
It’s a callback to the killjoys two year that Johnny proposed on Killjoys Season 4 Episode 1, “The Princess Warrior Bride,” which started their partnership. This is a full circle moment, and it’s such a sweet one between Johnny and Dutch.
The whole conversation between them is emotional, but as soon as the one year is mentioned, I start to cry. As much as I don’t want to think about the end, I do hope we flash forward a year, to see what life Johnny decides to live.
I don’t know which one I would want for him. I do think it would be interesting to see these robot geese that he’s so obsessed with. Do you want it to be with Dutch and D’av as killjoys, or do you want Johnny to be out doing his own thing?
Stray Thoughts
- Dutch and D’av reacting to hearing Newcy is amazingly hilarious and definitely some of my favorite moments from the hour.
- I was convinced Sparlo was somehow still alive and that it was all a fakeout. I guess I’m too paranoid.
- The prisoners cheering for the killjoys is such a great moment, and you can tell how much it affects our trio.
- Johnny and the warden make a fun team. I hope they get the chance to team up again.
- Fancy’s back!!

Delle Seyah and Aneela are the literal definition of Bad Bitch 101. Their evil-flirting with each other was really great and somehow heartwarming. I still believe that they can be good, in their own way, after everything they’ve been through. They both changed as people and now they have a family. I hope that some more light will be shed on that particular aspect.
Aneela still being Hullen was a HUGE shock….and I didn’t like how it caused conflict with my Green Queens! One on hand, I understand the reason why because these situations aren’t easy to navigate. Things cannot be exactly the same as they were before. Seeing Aneela and Kendry being insecure around each other while trying to hide it was heartwrenching. Along with some top notch comedy with Kendry throwing forest filth at Aneela, as if they’re children! I’m so glad that they talked and reconciled afterwards, with an actual romantic kiss!
Aneela telling Jaq to go away as she’s about to get sexual with his mother was just…gold. Motherfucking(uh pun intended?) GOLD!
I’m really interested in what Aneela’s parenting style would be. Too bad she didn’t get to spend much time with Jaq, but hopefully they’ll get to talk heart-to-heart in the future. It’s already clear that Aneela loves Jaq awww. But I’m a little worried as to what he’ll think if they tell him about all the terribe things they did.
Aneela obviously have some hard-wired prejudice against humans. I interpreted that to be self-loathing in her part, because she could still “feel so much” as Hullen. She thinks she’s broken and has to compensate by behaving in an elevated, superior manner to everyone. Oh, Aneela….I love you and don’t want you to hurt anymore. I’m extremely curious as to whether she’ll stay Hullen or become human by the end of the series.
So Jaq is hiding to the cube to be safe, while Aneela and Delle Seyah are heading off to save the universe together. YESSS QUEENS RISE!
I’ve been wondering how their newfound humanity and empathy, however slight, is going to affect the trajectory of their characters. We’ve already seen how it influenced their relationship with Jaq, but I’m hoping for more later on. The Green Queens are morally twisted and gray, but not absolutely pure Evil.
