Killjoys Review: A Bout, A Girl (Season 5 Episode 5)
On Killjoys Season 5 Episode 5, “A Bout, A Girl,” we get to spend some time in the forest with Jaq and Delle Seyah, and it’s even more delightful than imagined.
Anytime Delle Seyah Kendry is on screen, you know there is going to be some top notch sarcasm. She never lets us down in that respect. (Please see: Bad Bitch 101 comment.)
However, on “A Bout, A Girl,” we get to see the more vulnerable, emotional side of Delle Seyah. Jaq (and a visit from dream D’av) gets her to open up, which leads to a sweet conversation.

It can’t be easy for Delle Seyah to mourn the loss of Aneela while also being solely responsible for Jaq — someone who most likely constantly reminds her of Aneela. She doesn’t have D’av to fall back on, and in addition to keeping Jaq safe, there’s also the galaxy saving mission they’re on.
Speaking of dream D’av, what exactly is happening there? Is it all a weird dream hallucination? There are so many questions, but however it happens, it is such a great scene featuring my favorite co-parenting duo.
Dream D’av re-assures her and lets her know she’s doing an amazing job, which she is. Delle Seyah is a pretty good parent, and she’s done an amazing job at keeping Jaq safe. Who knew she was a skilled archer?!
Delle Seyah: You asked me in the forest what we are now without Aneela. I didn’t plan for you, Jaq. I wasn’t the type to want you. I was full. I was fine. And now you’re here, and I’m still fine, but I won’t be if anything ever happens to you. Because you are my son, and I am your mother. Losing Aneela doesn’t change any of that.
Jaq: Queens don’t cry, remember?
Delle Seyah: This one does, now. She’s a teeny bit broken.
Usually, pregnancy storylines aren’t the best thing to happen to a TV show, but that’s not the case here. Delle Seyah has experienced so much growth because of Jaq, and it’s great that she gets to voice how Jaq has changed her and her life. Is anyone else really emotional over Jaq and Delle Seyah?
ANEELA IS BACK! All is right with the world now that Delle Seyah and Aneela have been reunited.
Hopefully, Aneela will be able to shed some light on Jaq’s visions, and how she ended up in the mirror cube. Does she have a green pool in there? Lots of questions but also so much excitement that she’s back.

I can’t wait for Aneela to reunite with Team Awesome Force. It’ll also be really interesting to see Aneela interacting with Jaq as well as watching Jaq react to Aneela, who can be a bit strange at times.
It’s a fact that whenever a scene references “you’re my gravity, Johnny Jaqobis,” from Killjoys Season 2 Episode 5, “Meet the Parents,” it automatically becomes one of my favorite scenes. I don’t make the rules. This is just the way it goes.
Dutch: She’s ruined the one thing that keeps me getting back up again, that keeps me grounded, my gravity. She took my Johnny away, and I don’t know how to get him back.
This is such an important part of Johnny and Dutch’s relationship. Dutch is not what I would call a touchly feely person, and so to hear her describe the signficance of her relationship to Johnny in this way really paints a beautiful picture of how big of a part Johnny is in her life.
Gravity keeps you anchored when the rest of the world (or your life) is in chaos. Dutch needs him to help keep her sane through this battle with The Lady, and you can see how it’s paining her to not have her Johnny with her right now.
She’s off-balance without him.

The fallout from The Lady’s false lives has given Killjoys an amazing emotional storyline that (thankfully) continues to carry over from episode to episode. It’s given us, so far, D’av in protective older brother mode, and we’ve also seen a more emotional Dutch and Johnny.
Dutch and Johnny not being okay is painful, but the angst is marvelous. It’s so well done; nothing is rushed.
As much as we all want the two of them to be back to normal ASAP, there’s something amazing in watching them allowed to be in that state of sadness and awkwardness for a bit.
Khlyen: The world is a very dangerous place. There are enemies everywhere, always ready to do us harm. What is the thing that keeps us safe? It’s not the law, nor is it strength. It’s what we can do for each other, whether it’s the people we love or the ones we meet along the way. This is all we have. This is what makes us human.
It also wouldn’t make sense for the two of them to get back to normal that quickly.
The Lady, as Dutch says, has done a number on all of their brains, and we really get to see that through Johnny’s flashbacks to his (fake) life being married to Dutch. To kick the pain up a notch, Dutch starts remembering moments with her Johnny, before The Lady took him away from her.
The flashbacks are always nicely timed, and they pop up just at the most heartbreaking moments offering a stark contrast between what their relationship was and what it currently is. What are your Johnny and Dutch thoughts?
Stray Thoughts
- Khlyen having scenes with Gared is something I didn’t realize I badly needed.
- It’s really fun watching Dutch, Johnny, and D’av not be in control of their environment.
- I did not see the betrayal at the end coming. It’ll be interesting to what’s next for the warden and our killjoys.
- Can I take Bad Bitch 101? That sounds like an amazing class.
- Khlyen has a very rythmic, storytelling way about his speech at times; it’s enthralling.
- The “you have to kill my brother” storyline is random.
- Luke MacFarlane has been killing it with the comedic relief this season.

I’m honestly terrified and hope they don’t have Johnny and Dutch fall in love, it would ruin their friendship
I don’t think they will. Dutch and Johnny mean a lot to each other, but I don’t think the love between them is romantic. They definitely have a bond, and I don’t think anyone will be as special to Dutch as Johnny is to her; he is the thing that keeps her grounded no matter what else is going on. I think Johnny misses the comfort and joy of being married, and he’s also struggling to reconcile those remembered feelings with the regained knowledge of what his actual relationship with Dutch is like. Dutch also made her feelings about romance with Johnny quite clear when he (still under the Lady’s spell) kisses her. I hope we get to hear Johnny voice what exactly is going on in that head of his as he battles with the memories of his married life to Dutch.
Also, IF they do fall in love, I would hate it to be because of The Lady and her manipulations. Plus, there’s not enough time left in the series (sadly) for this transition from friends to lovers, in my opinion. They would have a lot of awkwardness to work out. Them falling in love would also put each of their relationships with D’av in a really weird, potentially un-recoverable situation.
Oh believe me, you’re not the person who’s rooting for this dysfunctional mother/son dynamic.
“I wish you were the one we lost in the Green.” UGHH Jaq is such an angsty teenager, but I could understand both sides. That broke my heart to pieces.
The scene with Dream Davin was an unexpectedly delightful surprise. I thought the line “Never claim what you might lose” by Delle Seyah was interesting. She obviously loves Jaq, but she’s afraid to get close to him because she might lose him. She’s already lost Aneela after getting very emotionally attached to her. She’s trying to protect herself from further heartbreak by reverting to her Qreshi upbringing, and keeping Jaq at a distance. It wasn’t until she had that enlightening conversation with Davin, that she finally got the courage to address Jaq as HER SON. She couldn’t directly say “I love you” but it meant the same thing. Awww.
“Queens don’t cry remember?”
“This one does, now.”
I’m so super proud of Delle Seyah Kendry and her progress throughout series. She’s always been my favorite character; It’s very exciting to watch her become a better version of herself, while still being a master of Bad Bitch 101.
I think Aneela is gonna be the more emotional of Jaq’s two moms. She displayed some caring motherly instincts with baby Dutch and unlike other Hullen, she actually retained most of her human emotions. Combined with Delle Seyah, Jaq will have two powerfully badass moms who will destroy anyone that threatens him.
That leads me to say…..ANEELA MY SPACE DAUGHTER IS BACK!!!
THE GREEN QUEENS FAMILY IS WHOLE AGAIN!
Delle Seyah Kendry falling to her knees at the sight of Aneela, the woman she loves??? After waiting through 15 episodes of separation???
I CAN’T STOP CRYING
THIS POST IS MAKING ME EMOTIONAL!
I really, really love Delle Seyah’s growth. She has had an amazing arc, and one I never imagined way back when we initially met her. I’m so here for watching Aneela and Delle Seyah being moms to Jaq; I can’t wait to see it.
Queens don’t cry or bow down to anyone….YET HERE WE ARE!
GREEN QUEENS FOREVER
