Killjoys Review: Meet the Parents (Season 2 Episode 5)

Killjoys, Reviews

“Meet the Parents” definitely struggles, but right now, let’s focus on something mind blowing and amazing — Dutch and Johnny hugging.

I have not recovered from this. I have watched Killjoys since the beginning, and I always enjoyed Dutch and Johnny’s partnership. I love their friendship, and how close the two of them are, but I never shipped them.

Well, now I’m moving in to a big old cabin on the Dutch and Johnny ship.

First off, the hug is such a huge moment because Dutch initiates it. My memory isn’t the best, but I don’t really remember Dutch and Johnny ever hugging.

She freaking tackles him out of the blue, and even Johnny feels the need to give Dutch an out by joking about avoiding eye contact. He knows it isn’t some friendly, platonic hug.

On top of that, she follows up the hug with this:

Dutch: A lot of things have changed for me lately. I’m just glad we haven’t. You’re my gravity, Johnny Jaqobis. If things did change, you’d tell me right?

He’s her gravity. I’m fine, really.

A fellow Tell-Tale writer, Samantha, commented on my fangirl freak out where I share the quote on Twitter saying that she doesn’t watch Killjoys, but even she thinks the quote is hella shippy. Are you on board the Johnny and Dutch ship?

This is also a huge moment for Dutch. She admits to Khlyen that she feels like she’s floating because she no longer has her hatred of him to hold on to. Her world is in flux right now, and when the one person she can always count on returns after being away, she latches on to him.

Dutch is rarely vulnerable, so it is amazing to see this side of her. I’m really looking forward to exploring how Dutch continues to navigate this new state of affairs with Khlyen, and what happens when she learns that Johnny might be changing on her.

Okay, I got the fangirl out of my system, at least for the moment. Let’s discuss all the family drama!

The very best part of Johnny and Pawter going to Qresh is the dinner scene. It’s absolutely hilarious. I don’t know what Johnny was doing when Pawter explained the rituals to him, but he for sure wasn’t paying attention.

Unfortunately, the rest of the time at Qresh is a tad annoying and predictable. The first time we meet her parents, they both die. Okay, so we met the dad before on a holochat, but does that really count?

Hank being behind the attacks isn’t surprising. I don’t care about Pawter’s mom being a jerk and then dying in front of Pawter. It’s too predictable to make an impact. None of the “big” moments really work, and it starts to be a bit much. I mean her dad sacrifices himself at the end, really?

Back on Lucy, things are a little more exciting.

The D’av and Khlyen body swap is a lot of fun. Humor aside, the swap allows for Dutch to have some quality time with Khlyen, while D’av sees his dad for the first time in years.

Khlyen drops a bombshell and tells Dutch that the person who looks exactly like her in the Arkyn memories isn’t her. Are we thinking clone here of have I been watching too much Orphan Black? Oh wait, there’s no such thing as too much Orphan Black.

Clone is my best guess right now. Killjoys is set in a world with modified robots, so clones isn’t too far out there. What’s your theory?
