TV News Wrap-Up: ‘Wynonna Earp’ Returning in 2020, ‘Sandman’ Series Ordered By Netflix, ‘The Affair’ Final Season Trailer
We’re now in a post Stranger Things Season 3 world. After binging the latest installment of supernatural goings-on in the town of Hawkins, we’re hungry for some more news.
Fortunately, the wheel of television news never stops turning. Here are a few new developments for new series that you can get excited about.
Teasers
A trailer for the final season of The Affair has dropped. While most of the trailer centers on Noah, it also features the first footage of Anna Paquin. Paquin will appear in a future-set storyline as a grown-up Joanie, Cole and Alison’s daughter. The Affair Season 5 premieres Sunday, August 25th at 9/8c on Showtime.
Zachary Quinto teased about Stephen King Easter Eggs in NOS4A2. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Quinto discussed what made him say yes to the role and some of the easter eggs where the show pays homage to Stephen King. Quinto portrays a Charlie Manx, an immortal being who feeds on the souls of children and takes them to Christmasland, a Christmas village where happiness is illegal. The series is based on the 2013 novel by Joe Hill.

Renewals and Cancellations
Earpers can rest easy because Wynonna Earp has been saved! The series was greenlit for Season 4 on Tuesday with an announcement from IDW Entertainment and reports that Syfy has agreed to pay a higher licensing fee to get the season made. You can read more about this exciting news here.

Ransom has been canceled after three seasons on CBS. Variety reports that the cancellation doesn’t come as a surprise since Ransom was “among the lowest-rated shows on broadcast last season. It averaged a 0.26 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and just over 2.3 million viewers per episode throughout its third season.”

Casting News
Lifetime has cast the leads in their NXIVM sex cult movie. According to TV Line, the roles of Keith Raneire and Allison Mack, in the film NXIVM Cult: A Mother’s Nightmare, will be played by Peter Facinelli and Sara Fletcher. The film will center around the true story of actress Catherine Oxenberg and her fight to save her daughter India from the cult. Andrea Roth has been cast as Oxenberg and Jasper Polish will play India.

Good Witch has been renewed for Season 6, but Bailee Madison won’t be returning. Deadline broke the story, reporting that Madison would be departing at the end Good Witch Season 5. Her character, Grace, is poised to graduate allowing for a natural wrap to her storyline.

Series Orders
Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel series Sandman is coming to life at Netflix with an 11-episode order. The Hollywood Reporter states that the series from Warner Bros. TV has landed at Netflix with a huge financial commitment. This will make it the most expensive live-action TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done. This news comes more than three years after attempting to turn the graphic novels into a feature film.

Industry News
A new study has caused Netflix to pledge that they will cut down on depictions of smoking. According to Deadline, the streaming drama has pledged to cut back on back on depictions of smoking unless the inclusion is character-defining or essential to the creative vision. The study was conducted by The Truth Initiative which found “1,209 total “tobacco depictions” in episodic programming during the 2016-17 season, with a whopping 866 of those depictions on Netflix.” Among the offenders were Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, and Unbreakable Kimmi Schmidt.
