Superstore Review: Easter (Season 4 Episode 16)

Reviews, Superstore

Holidays in retail are always a fun time.

On Superstore Season 4 Episode 16, “Easter,” the Cloud 9 gang faces both Easter-related and regular retail-related issues.

Something really compelling about “Easter” is the way that it appeals to the vanity in all of us. Every person has an inherent need to be liked. Amy’s obsession with what her former co-workers and current subordinates are saying about her appeals to the vanity in everyone.

That doesn’t make it more comfortable to watch in every case, but it does make it funny!

It’s only natural that Amy’s recent changeover to management would make her more insecure than normal, but the real comedic moments come from Jonah’s reaction to being a floor worker and sharing some of Amy’s executive privilege.

Ben Feldman’s approach to getting Garrett to compliment him to his face is especially funny, and his dead giveaway of the camera in the break room is even better.

Though this behavior is largely expected from all involved, it does lead to a sweet moment for Garrett while Jonah isn’t looking.

Garrett: It’s fine. We’re cool. He’s my best friend.

I do foresee some issues for Jonah. Eventually there will be a floor worker versus manager conflict big enough to put him in a compromising position. You can’t date your manager forever.

Elsewhere, probably the funniest part of the episode is the rogue Easter bunny loose in the store. It starts off as a mystery (who is this and what are they doing?) and turns into a hilarious fleecing of Dina by Sandra and Jerry.

Superstore is at its absolute best when performing ridiculous gags like the Easter bunny. Sure, the introspective into the lives of retail workers is great, but convincing Dina that the Easter bunny isn’t really there is a gold mine.

A few stray thoughts:

  • Cheyenne and Mateo are very funny characters, but I’m not sure I’d want to work with either of them. There’s a lot of badmouthing going on at this Cloud 9.
  • I can so relate to Glenn’s friends not wanting to come to his play. I mean, I probably wouldn’t go to this either, but I can still relate to the poor guy.
  • This I have to ask: What does Jerry do for a living? How is it that he’s able to come to Cloud 9 and spend all day there dressed as an Easter bunny?
  • Not sure why Jerry can’t just break up with Carol, either. I know that Carol sucks and she deserves this, but at what point does she deserve a little decency?
  • I always love the intermediate gags between scenes, but the guy dropping his paper cup into a display was a little too real. I’ve never understood why it happens, but it happens all the time.
