Supergirl Review: All About Eve (Season 4 Episode 16)
Supergirl Season 4 Episode 17, “All About Eve,” starts with Lena, Alex, and Supergirl teaming up to stop a terrorist and ends with Supergirl being labeled one instead.
The bulk of “All About Eve” concerns the efforts of Lena, Alex, and Supergirl to find the duplicitous Eve Teschmacher in order to get to Lex. Their team-up is the strongest part of the episode.

Seeing Lena, Alex and Kara team up is always a treat and exceedingly satisfying. The best scene of “All About Eve” is the trio working together to defeat a kryptonite-enhanced monstrosity created by Lex and Eve in Eve’s lab. Each woman brings a special skill that compliments the others,’ showcasing what a powerful force they are when they work together and it’s a joy to watch.
This team-up is also special as it’s the first time we see Lena and Kara, or rather Supergirl, make headway towards truly repairing their relationship after their big fight last season. Up until this point we’ve seen a sort of truce between the two, or more specifically on Lena side since she’s the one that somehow doesn’t know her best friend who she loves and trusts is the Superhero she doesn’t.

On “All About Eve” Kara finally shows some vulnerability and humility to Lena, as Supergirl, when she apologizes for overreacting to Lena’s experiments with the Harun-El. By allowing Lena to see her vulnerability and fears about failing, Lena is able to understand Supergirl a little better and accept her apology as more genuine and sincere.
I think the idea of having the weight of the world on her shoulders is something Lena can specifically relate to and empathize with as well and it creates space for Kara to rebuild trust with Lena as Supergirl.
Of course, this could all come crashing down again as Lena has yet to reveal that she was working with Lex to create the Harun-El serum, but my hope is that the faith Lena shows in Supergirl at the end of the episode is reciprocated when that finally comes out. Lena has earned that faith and benefit of the doubt by now. She deserves to have people in her life that will see the best in her even when she makes mistakes.

The trio eventually believes they’ve tracked down Eve but it turns out to be a red herring orchestrated by Lex and Eve to keep Supergirl occupied and distracted. As Kara confronts what turns out to be a hologram of Eve, Red Kara, in a Supergirl costume, attacks the White House and frames Supergirl for a terrorist attack making Kara officially an enemy of the State and leaving viewers with quite the cliff hanger.
Stray Thoughts
- The scenes with J’onn and the spirit of his father as J’onn tries to come to terms with who he is are nice, and I’m intrigued to see how this all finally resolves but it does seem like a really inopportune time for him to be jetting off world and leaving his friends when things are literally on fire.
- Underscoring how much I’ve grown to love the relationship between Alex and Lena, I am actually more relieved that Alex wasn’t mad at Lena than I am that Supergirl forgives her.
- I hope that James’ future storylines revolve around his PTSD from being shot and his relationship with his sister rather than giving him superpowers from serum he received to save his life. I don’t know how they explain why James doesn’t receive powers when Lex and Eve’s cousin both did after taking the same serum, but those stories have so much more rich potential for James than just making him another superpowered character in a show already overflowing with them.
- The best line from “All About Eve” hands down is Kara saying “Crazy Lex girlfriend” after learning Eve is in love with Lex.
- I am still perplexed and intrigued by Col. Haley. She may not ever be an ally, but it seems clear that she is not a reactionary or an ideologue. I’d really love to know more of her backstory in a future episode and maybe understand her better. I also wouldn’t be mad if she stuck around for season 5.
