Schitt’s Creek Review: The Roast (Season 5 Episode 12)
It’s not often that we get a real look into Ted and Alexis’s relationship, but on Schitt’s Creek Season 5 Episode 12, “The Roast,” that’s exactly what we’re given. Though it still remains a bit of a mystery why exactly Ted loves Alexis as much as he does, it is clear that his love for her is deep and genuine, and that hers is in return.
What we’ve watched all season is Alexis oscillate between her old selfish persona and her new evolved one. Sometimes, she gets stuck in the past, and it takes a little more of a push to bring her back to her new life.
What is clear from this episode is that Ted is foolishly prepared to give up his life’s happiness in order to be with Alexis. And that Alexis is both unaware of the magnitude of this sacrifice and also completely unprepared to reciprocate.
Additionally, Alexis doesn’t seem to recognize the negative impact of allowing Ted to give up his dreams in order to stay in Schitt’s Creek and be with her. Thank goodness for Twyla.
It often seems as though Alexis is missing the point entirely when other people are giving her advice. Whether it be Twyla or David or her mother, Alexis has a way of seeming completely disconnected when engaged in conversation with others about her own life.
However, like Moira has been many times, we’re often reminded not to underestimate Alexis. She has the capacity to process good advice and come to the right conclusions, even as it seems like she’s incapable of making selfless choices.

Thankfully, Alexis recognizes that it’s her turn to give something up to be with Ted. She does love him and she is proud of him, and this is her chance to support him. She offers to go with him, opening the door for what will hopefully be at least a few episodes of “Ted and Alexis do the Galapagos” in Season 6.
Meanwhile, this episode gives us an opportunity to glimpse the greatness that is on the way. Stevie and Patrick (newly minted Canadian Screen Award winners, Emily Hampshire and Noah Reid) are hard at work rehearsing their dance numbers for Moira’s production of Cabaret.
Has there ever been a teasier teaser? Watching these two sing and dance their way through Money made me want more immediately. Oh, what a season finale it’s going to be!
A quick shout out must also be made to the deterioration of David in light of the quality time his best friend and his boyfriend are spending together working on this show. The cold open is masterful, as David teeters on the brink of completely losing it while he tries to cover for them with his mother.
Though it is all in good fun, it does point to a phenomenon in human relationships that can get sticky at times. David seems to be okay for the moment, but it can be hard when your two favorite people start having fun without you. It will be interesting to see how David responds to their growing closeness as the season winds down.
The next episode teases some adorable outdoorsy time for Patrick and a decidedly non-outdoorsy David, so that should also be fun.
