Suits Review: The Greater Good (Season 8 Episode 13)

Reviews, Suits

Even though having the past come back to haunt the firm feels like a story we’ve seen a hundred times on Suits, it’s mostly enjoyable to watch it as happens in a different way, and it serves a few important functions.

Suits Season 8 Episode 13, “The Greater Good,” brings back familiar faces and it reminds us of how the firm, as it currently exists, came to be in the first place.

Especially since the show is now in its eighth season, it would be easy for it to keep moving forward without ever really looking back. Suits doesn’t make this mistake, though. It remains a cohesive story because it does so often bring up the past.

Doing that is also a reminder that Suits lives in the grey areas. We know Harvey is okay with breaking the rules when he has to, but what’s continuing to come up as a common theme — even with Mike out of the picture — is the question of morality when it comes to corporate law.

Katrina has already struggled with deciding what kind of lawyer she wants to be, in some ways filling a void Mike left. Now Harvey and Donna are reminded of what they’ve done — which stands to hurt someone else altogether, Stu.

I love that we get to see Stu again, and thankfully, another returning face becomes part of a plan to make sure things work out for him, and that’s Sean Cahill (Neal McDonough).

In an unexpected turn, we also see the return of Kevin Miller (Erik Palladino), who things are going well for these days. But he still owes Harvey a favor.

Those details show that Mike is still very much a presence on the series, even though he isn’t actually there. That’s something I’ve appreciated about this season since the start. Both Mike and Rachel still exist in this world, and their impact is very much there.

Harvey even makes a call to Mike at the of the episode. He leaves a voicemail, and it’s enough to suggest that the two are still in touch — another nice detail.

That’s not the first phone call Harvey makes that night, however. He calls Donna first, hoping to go out for a drink. She misses the call because she’s otherwise engaged…

I like this new romance for Donna. It’s fun to see her happy and it’s fun to see some focus on her having a personal life, even going so far to show the boundaries she’s setting for herself when it comes to work. She’s refusing to let work interfere, which she certainly deserves.

I’m not sure what I expect to come from Harvey and Donna before the series ends, but I at least feels this is going to cause some complication. For us to see her phone ring with Harvey’s name on the screen while Donna is with Thomas is clearly saying something, after all.

And her relationship with Harvey comes up when Donna talks to Katrina about her situation with Brian, which, quite frankly, is a storyline I’m glad to see wrapping up. Donna always has the good advice, and she has it here because of her own experience of having feelings for Harvey while also working with him.

Meanwhile, Samantha is dealing with her own case, and it’s one that’s personal to her. Her foster mother needs legal help, but she’s taking the fall for one of her foster children.

The case is a meaningful one, and though it takes a pause when Samantha learns that her foster mother let her go when she didn’t actually have to years ago, it ultimately has a happy ending and makes me appreciate Samantha’s character even more than I did before.
