36 Greatest LGBTQ+ Television Couples from the Past Ten Years (continued):

10. Stef and Lena Foster (The Fosters)
THE FOSTERS - "Insult to Injury" - Jesus is seriously injured and rushed to the hospital on the winter premiere of "The Fosters," airing TUESDAY, JANUARY 31 (8:00 - 9:00 p.m. EST), on Freeform. (Freeform/Eric McCandless)
THE FOSTERS – (Freeform/Eric McCandless)
TERI POLO, SHERRI SAUM

Of all the television couples to date, one of the strongest is definitely Stef and Lena Foster from The Fosters. Not only are these women married to each other, but they are raising a whole household of children together.

It isn’t always easy to balance work, family, and individual needs. However, these women take it in stride and solve all their complications through communication and love.

Stef and Lena show us all what it means to be a strong, supportive, and loving couple. They gave a normalization to lesbian relationships everywhere. Through the good times and the hardships, they lean on each other and support one another’s decisions.

Their love is strong and their children are living proof of that.

11. Captain Holt and Kevin (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

If you need a feel good, established relationship then look no further than Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Captain Holt and his husband have been a relationship in the background of all the shenanigans since the very first episode.

That is the beauty of their relationship. It isn’t a storyline, it is just there. Captain Holt is a middle-aged man who has been in a loving relationship with his husband for years. He announces it in the first episode and after that everyone around him just accepts it.

Once again, this is a relationship that shows the normality of such loving bonds. In a time where LGBTQ+ relationships have to be the center of attention for a TV show to feel they are making waves, Captain Holt and Kevin prove that simply being makes an even bigger statement.

12. Nomi Marks and Amanita Caplan (Sense 8)

Sense8 Season 2

On a show all about the connection between eight individuals, the boundaries of sexuality are definitely bound to be pushed. Sense8 does just that with their pairing of Nomi and Amanita a trans lesbian relationship.

From the beginning, Nomi fought with her family to be accepted as a male-to-female trans person. Her relationship with Amanita actually ends up saving her life, literally. They work together to help Nomi come to terms with all of who they are.

It’s a unique telling of a trans lesbian story that bears repeating. Through complex and nuanced performances, Nomi and Amanita prove they are well worth being remembered and celebrated. Nomi proves she isn’t, nor will she ever be, a second class citizen.

13. Connor Walsh and Oliver Hampton (How To Get Away With Murder)

oliver and connor how to get away with murder

When we first meet How To Get Away With Murder‘s Connor Walsh he is a carefree playboy. Then he meets Oliver Hampton and his world comes to a screeching halt.

The relationship between the two isn’t easy, especially considering oftentimes it is predicated on lies and murder. What shines through is their willingness to step up and show the other that they have their back and support.

When Oliver gets diagnosed with HIV it almost sinks their relationship, but Connor really steps things up and shows Oliver that he loves him more than initially shown. Connor tells Oliver that they will face this newest challenge together.

More recently the two tied the knot and showed their friends and family alike that when you love someone sometimes the sacrifices are well worth it.

14. Sol and Robert (Grace and Frankie)

Sol and Robert – Grace and Frankie

Netflix’s Original, Grace and Frankie, is a prime example of an often forgotten segment of the LGBTQ+ community, the older generation. It’s vastly misrepresented and fortunately, this show is a perfect example of two men in the later stages of life finding love and companionship.

Sol and Robert have been business partners for years and also secret lovers. Now they’ve found their courage to step out into the light.

It’s a relationship that older LGBTQ+ members deserve to see represented. Hopefully, this show is just the beginning for a movement to tell older generation’s stories.

15. Henrietta Wilson and Karen (9-1-1)
Hen and Karen
Hen and Karen

One of the few completely African American couples on this list, 9-1-1‘s Hen and Karen are another one of those couples who skate the background. Much like Captain Holt and Kevin (Brooklyn Nine Nine), these women are together and it isn’t an issue.

In fact, when Hen is first introduced as a lesbian character it is in a subtly simple way. She is having a conversation with her wife and son. There is beauty in its simplicity.

In fact, it’s so small that if you blink you just might miss it, but not in a bad way. Hen’s sexuality doesn’t define her. It is just a small part of her whole person.

There is no outrageous drama to fuel their relationship. Instead, they face normal complications such as cheating and custody issues. All the while with quiet love and grace.

16. Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis (Days of Our Lives)

Will and Sonny

This couple is the only daytime soap couple to grace our list. Most of the time couples on soap operas get together and break up so many times it makes our heads spin. However, on Days of Our Lives, Will and Sonny have been pretty consistent, all things considered.

Their story started with a complicated coming out on Will’s part with Sonny there as a friend to support him. Then they started dating but had to deal with the threat of Will creating a child with his ex-girlfriend, Gabby. Once they dealt with that snag their relationship moved forward without too much of a hitch.

Sure, they had the usual relationship dramas that come with a soap opera, but they are one of the few gay couples to ever make it down the aisle. A feat that really stuck with them and only truly caused a hiccup when Will was killed.

Now that Will is back from the dead and finally remembers his relationship with Sonny, long story, they seem to be trying to make it work. Despite Sonny being forced to marry one of their foes. Through it all, they find the time to love and support one another and raise Will’s daughter, Arianna together.

17. Alex Danvers and Maggie Sawyer (Supergirl)

Alex and Maggie

In a perfect example of enemies to lovers, Supergirl brings Alex and Maggie together. The two women were originally working the same cases for different organizations and were, therefore, working against each other.

Eventually, they end up finding a way to work together and ultimately end up falling in love. In the moment when Alex realizes her own personal feelings, she finally makes her own mark outside of the shadow of her super sister.

Maggie encourages Alex to open up and let her in despite all the walls Alex has up to protect herself. It’s a beautiful story of love and respect that never overshadows their careers or professional lives.

The two may have recently broken up, but fans haven’t given up on them yet.

18. Clarke Griffin and Lexa (The 100)

THE 100 SEASON 2 EPISODE 14

While this relationship was short-lived, it still left a major impact on all who viewed and enjoyed it. The 100 gave fans one of the best relationships to date with the strong badass female characters of Clarke and Lexa.

These two started off enemies in the fight for survival on the ground. But when an even bigger foe threatens both of their groups the two band together to form an alliance. This alliance ends up in a passionate, yet strategic relationship between the two.

The hardest moment to watch is definitely Lexa’s death scene, but she ultimately comes back to help her spirit mate, Clarke in a really big way.

Despite their short-lived relationship, their demise has stirred up lots of big feelings among fans and supporters. This alone shows just how successful their portrayal really is.

  • What about Sophie and Maddie from Coronation Street, I know it was tragic and all but they were still a wonderful and lovely couple.

    • Im very disappointed at the lack of Jim Lahey and Randy from trailer park boys. An extremely Sure it’s as toxic as their environment but the only thing Jim loves more than the Liquor, is his Randy.

  • As others have said, Cophine (Orphan Black, Cosima x Delphine) and and Doccubus (Lost Girl, Lauren and Bo) definitely belong on this list too!

  • What about Brian & Justin from Queer as Folk (USA)? My favourite gay couple of all time, even as dysfunctional as they were!

    • We have a list of Classic LGBTQ+ couples on our site as well. You will find several Queer as Folk couples on that list.

  • I can not take this list serious if lexa and Clarke (clexa from the 100) and Root and Shaw (Shoot from Person of interest) are not on it!!

  • Anne Lister and Ann Walker in Gentleman Jack. The best drama series for many a year.

  • Malec (Shadowhunters) deserves all the kudos they receive. They are some of the most fully developed LGBTQ characters in TV history, and their romance was epic.
