Chicago Med Review: Be My Better Half (Season 4 Episode 1)

Chicago Med, Reviews

Our favorite Chicago doctors are back and thrown right into the middle of it on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 1, “Be My Better Half.”

With the aftermath of everything that happened at the end of last season, there is plenty of tension to go around, from Dr. Charles dealing with his suspicions that Sarah’s dad is a serial killer to Connor’s new job offer to the new COO at Med.

It’s this tension coming into Chicago Med Season 4 that makes for a compelling start to a few stories…especially when there’s a secret involved!

The minute that Gwen, the new COO, shoots down the idea of the hybrid OR because of costs, it almost feels like a foregone conclusion that Connor’s dad would somehow inevitably be involved in terms of funding.

What’s surprising is the fact that Ava goes behind Connor’s back to do it. The moment she approaches his father, there’s an undercurrent of something between them that I really hope I’m wrong about.

Because if that invitation to dinner is more than what it looks like (and that’s where I hope I’m wrong), then that whole dynamic between Ava, Connor, and Connor’s dad is going to get very complicated — and not in a fun way.

I have come to enjoy the fun, flirty, competitive dynamic between Ava and Connor, and that development of feelings has been interesting to see. But it definitely feels like Connor’s dad is going to get in the way of it.

One of the toughest stories to watch play out, though, is Sarah and Dr. Charles’, as we see the break of trust. It’s so severe that she can’t even finish her time at Med, leaving Dr. Charles to deal with another daughter-like figure in his life going away as a result of his own actions.

It’s kind of heartbreaking to watch as he lashes out at a new med student before finally dealing with the emotional fallout of losing someone as close to him as Sarah was.

Oliver Platt does a lovely job conveying Dr. Charles’ grief as a result of this loss. By the end of the Chicago Med Season 4 premiere, even I’m still in a little bit of disbelief at the fact that Dr. Reese is gone. I’m also busy trying to figure out what’s coming up for Dr. Charles after that prison infirmary confrontation.

Elsewhere, the first “patient of the week” of the season features an emotionally affecting story that manages to tug at my heartstrings, even if the duo at the center of it was only introduced at the start of “Be My Better Half.”

Peter: She broke it off. Now it’s all for the best. I don’t want her coming back out of pity. She should be with someone who won’t be a burden to her.

Peter and Bonnie’s struggles are heartbreaking to watch but manage to leave us with a beautiful, heartwarming moment in the end.

Maggie: She said that she’ll be his eyes and he’ll be her ears.

Random Thoughts:

  • Curry, the new medical student, manages to become my least favorite med student in the span of about 20 minutes.
  • That final scene between the new COO and Sharon pretty much sets the tone for their adversarial relationship, and I am firmly on Team Goodwin.
  • I’m going to miss Dr. Sarah Reese, but it’s definitely understandable why she would want to leave.

  • I honestly wasn’t that surprised by Sarah Reese’s departure. She’s become more whiny and irratic since season 2. I honestly lost my patience with her ages ago. While I do believe some of Dr. Charles actions pls into her behavior we can’t fully blame him. I’m on Team Charles. He was doing what he did out of love and protection of Sarah. It breaks my heart to see him this way.
As for the COO/Goodwin fight I too am 100% Goodwin.
Connor’s Dad and Ava most definitely hooked up and he is using it to ultimately manipulate his son, once again. While interesting turn of events I’m not here for it because it’s a level of mess the show doesn’t need.
This season is definitely going to be interesting to say the least.

  • I have not watched Med or any One Chicago this season. They wrote Sarah off and that’s it. She was one of the original cast and there were other ways to have her in the situations without making her so dark. The writers/producers need to be replaced. You either like their ships or forget it. That’s OK but if you want fans and a social media show it might be good to make some of the fans happy. My bet is Manstead will never get married. Ava had to sleep with Connors dad just his par of the investment was worth more that just dinner and I’ll never believe otherwise. We never got a reason why Rachel actually left. Was it for personal reasons (I don’t want to know what they are) I wish her well if it was but I think it was just wrong to write her off for the story. She was one of the original cast and the story will no longer be the same. I know it’s not Oliver Platt’s fault but I blame some of her problems on Dr Charles and all the others. I have had enough. I read all the reviews of the first show but knew it was the end. Now I turn my Live Hulu to another show so the Nielson ratings go to another show. Maybe the fire at the end of the saeason will be Med burning down
