Wynonna Earp Review: Jolene (Season 3 Episode 5)
On Wynonna Earp Season 3 Episode 5, “Jolene,” Purgatory is in chaos, and it’s all thanks for Jolene and her delicious sweets. Apparently, no one in the town has heard of “stranger danger.”
The power of Jolene’s sweets is a little unclear. Best guess is that the baked goods do whatever Jolene wants — force everyone to believe she is their best friend, force them to tell her everything, cause chaos, and even turn against Waverly.
It would have been great to learn more about Jolene, especially since she is connected to Bulshar.

Also, is it just me or does it seem like Mama Earp somehow informs Bulshar of Jolene’s whereabouts? How do you get in contact with his creepiness?
There are still so many questions about Jolene. All we know is she is linked to Waverly, which doesn’t explain her baking skills.
All the lingering questions aside, Jolene brings a dose of fun, southern charm, and drama with her.
Waverly: I know Mama is a problem.
Jolene: Baby, soggy crust is a problem. Your mama is a catastrophe.
It’s beyond entertaining to see Jolene warp everyone’s behavior. We get to see a different aspect of everyone’s relationships.
Jolene knows how to have a good time and, man, can she sing! Karaoke night is a strangely fun backdrop for everything that goes on at Shorty’s, and it works really well.
An unexpected plus side to Jolene’s presence is we finally get to meet non-insane Mama Earp.

Aside from Wynonna’s hallucination of her on Wynonna Earp Season 3 Episode 2, this is the first time we’ve really gotten to know Mama Earp. She’s sane. She’s coherent. She’s amazing.
Hopefully, we’re not sending her back to jail. We need some Earp family bonding, and Mama Earp needs to meet Nicole!
Plus, we are going to need so many more details on Waverly’s dad, Julian.
Bobo: Bulshar wants his ring. It was on his hand when it got cut off by his spider wife, the widow.
Doc: What does it do?
Bobo: It makes his finger look really pretty.
It’s such a relief that we’re finally getting answers about Waverly’s parents.
If there are angels in Wynonna Earp, then this really opens up the mythology. This could mean that in addition to revenants and things that go bump in the night, the show could explore angels and even God.
This is an exciting development, and it will be interesting to see how this knowledge affects everyone, especially Waverly, moving forward.

What do you think of the angel dad bombshell? It makes Bobo’s comments about Waverly being “his angel” even more on point.
Speaking of Waverly, this is such an intense episode for her.
Waverly is incredibly strong, and it’s great to see her stand on her own. Even with everyone seemingly against her, Waverly has faith, and she believes in her friends, her family.
Waverly: I’m here, and I stay. I love them back. And I never, never give up on them.
Waverly manages to learn the truth about Jolene and put up quite a fight all on her own. Yes, Wynonna and everyone were on their way to save Waverly, but Waverly proves that she isn’t a damsel that needs rescuing.
She didn’t know that everyone was coming to save her, but she has faith that they will, and they don’t let her down.
One thing Wynonna Earp has proved time and time again is that there is no coming between Waverly and Nicole.

Wayhaught’s love is strong. It can withstand anything, and this is such a nice thread to run through the series.
It’s comforting knowing that you can always count on Nicole and Waverly to be in love and be there for each other.
Lingering Questions:
- Does Bulshar’s ring return to Nicole because she is a cult survivor and somehow connected to him?
- Why is Bulshar so hung up on his ring, and will it somehow affect Doc now that he’s wearing it?
- Jeremy, where are you? What are your thoughts on Jolene?
- Who suggested that Shorty’s have a karaoke night, and how long did it take to convince Doc?
- What are the odds Jolene will share her recipes or teach a baking class?
