While at San Diego Comic-Con, we spoke with The Magicians star Summer Bishil during a roundtable interview about Season 4 and what to expect from her new persona, Janet.

Over the past three seasons, Margo has experienced arguably the greatest growth of any character. She’s moved beyond only providing bitchy quips and comic relief to become the badass High King of Fillory.

Thankfully, Bishil said we won’t find that Janet’s personality has changed too much from the fan-favorite witty and hilarious character we’ve all come to know and love.

“Janet has a new trade, but she is still a proponent of change in the profession she’s in and still very outspoken and motivated and ambitious and strong, as is Margo,” she revealed.

Bishil explained that the writers gave her a choice as to whether she’d play her new persona completely differently. She chose to keep Janet’s personality pretty similar to Margo’s.

“I didn’t [change Janet], because number one, it wasn’t written to be [completely different]. And number two, what I realized when I was preparing was, it’s still [Margo] — just without the knowledge that magic is real and that she can do it herself,” Bishil said.

“That certainly has defined her, probably a great deal. But there were certain characteristics at her core that still remain and that are innate to her being and soul.”

“It could be completely wrong!” she joked. “I don’t know — maybe I should have changed everything!”
