Killjoys Review: Greening Pains (Season 4 Episode 5)

Killjoys, Reviews

On Killjoys Season 4 Episode 5, “Greening Pains,” the team’s main focus is on figuring out what the hell is going on with D’av’s son. This gives them a chance to be killjoys again, which is fun.

Dutch is out of the green, and Johnny is back to normal. There’s no better way to celebrate than with a smash and grab.

It’s been a while since we have seen them take on a proper mission. Sure, there’s no warrant, but kidnapping Kravn features all the standard flare that comes with D’av, Dutch, and Johnny being killjoys.

Pip: Hi, excuse me. Do you seriously have no drinks that aren’t alcoholic, or have y’all just been drunk the entire time I’ve known you?

The mission is also lighthearted and fun, which is definitely needed after all the intensity that The Lady and Hullen!Johnny brought.

Between the run-throughs of how the event is going to work and D’av being high on stimulants, the mission provides lots of laughs.

Dutch and Johnny also, thankfully, figure out that Khlyen’s story is a code!

Dutch and Johnny bickering about how things actually happened is delightful, and honestly, we couldn’t go much longer without them putting together that there was a code in the message.

We were reaching the point of frustration. There is only so many times that Dutch could ask Johnny about it before you start to wonder why it’s taking them so long to figure it out.

Now that they at least know it is a code, it will be intriguing watching them put together what all of Khlyen’s changes mean, and how they relate to stopping The Lady.

Johnny: It’s a bit early to be drinking.

Dutch: It’s a little early to be my mother.

Johnny: Well, it’s nice to see that things are getting back to normal.

Dutch: We have a baby on board, Delle Seyah is asleep down the hall, and I just saw Pip naked in our shower.

Johnny: Okay, new normal.

“Greening Pains” features two side storylines that tie into the bigger mysteries.

Gared and Fancy partnering up is pretty awesome. They are polar opposites, which makes watching them try to work together beyond entertaining.

Turin yelling at his Hullen doll isn’t as fun. It’s necessary to show that the Hullen are awake and on the move, but that’s about it.

Neither storyline is engaging enough to stand on its own and take over a good chunk of the hour, and Killjoys knows that. The show excels at balancing out storylines.

We get just enough to understand what’s going on, but the storylines don’t overstay their welcome.

Killjoys is also great at showing that something — in this case The Lady mobilizing The Hullen and searching for the kid — is happening all over the show’s universe and not in whatever storyline Dutch, Johnny, and D’av happen to be in.

D’av: Can I just say, again, masks make me look goofy?

The Lady’s actions are affecting people’s lives all over the Quad and beyond. She’s everywhere.

It’s fascinating to realize how organized she is and how much control she has from within the green. The plasma may all be crystallized, but that isn’t stopping The Lady.

Pip’s brief stint as a kidnapper also highlights The Lady’s reach, and it’s about time we focus back on that spider that is definitely inside of him.

We’re definitely in store for a super gross spider removal, aren’t we? Ew. Time to mentally prepare for that now, I suppose.

It’s a shame that Delle Seyah is asleep for 99% of the hour.

She’s wormed her way into her hearts, and the hour is just not the same without her.

Johnny: You want to stop feeling bad, Delle Seyah? Stop being a shitty person. Do the work.

Delle Seyah: Well, who do I pay to do that?

It would have been really fun to see her join the team in their mission to kidnap Kravn and figure out what’s going on with her son. There could have been so much banter.

Her conversation with Johnny about life post-Hullen is a great reminder that the two of them have this unique experience that bonds them, which neither one of them probably wants.

It would be great if we could continue to see the two of them develop something resembling a friendship. Friendship is a strong word since she is responsible for killing Pawter, but, still, give me all the Johnny and Delle Seyah scenes!
