Take Two Review: Shadows of the Past (Season 1 Episode 9)
On Take Two Season 1 Episode 9, “Shadows of the Past,” Sam and Eddie team up with the LAPD to catch a serial killer.
The LAPD is more than a little hesitant to accept help from Eddie, but Chris puts in a good word for him and keeps him in the loop. It looks like Chris might be the only friend Eddie still has on the force. It’s obvious that Detective Elder has a problem with Eddie and no interest in or respect for Sam.

Eddie is truly in his element at the crime scene. He was probably an excellent cop. It’s sad that he was put in a situation that made him feel like leaving was his only option.
Sam: I see the way the other cops look at you, how Elder treats you, I know that feeling. It’s not easy to live with. Not in the least.
Eddie: It’s one of the consequences of being me, of the decisions I made back then. I broke the blue code. It is what it is.
Sam and Eddie don’t let the lack of cooperation from the police stop them. In fact, they are one step ahead of the cops the whole way.
Do Rollins and Elder even make one single advancement on this case? It seems like Eddie and Sam do all the work from start to finish.

ALIYAH O’BRIEN
A pet peeve of mine: I hate when shows use a discarded coffee cup to get DNA!
It’s a trick commonly used by crime shows, and it drives me nuts. I understand using a cup for fingerprints, but not DNA. It’s very unlikely that there’s any DNA on that cup. You need skin cells, not just saliva. There’s no DNA in saliva!
On a better note, the lab and our wonderful ME, Mick English, are featured heavily on this episode. I love that he just calls Sam and Eddie for every development. I’m pretty sure he’s only supposed to tell the police and let them share it. But Mick knows that Sam and Eddie care more and are working harder to solve this case.
Eddie makes an excellent catch about Philip’s wrist injuries. Once again, Eddie proves he notices a level of detail that other people do not. This episode really exemplifies why Eddie should still be a cop.

EDDIE CIBRIAN, RACHEL BILSON
He’s doing a fine job teaching Sam to be an investigator too. On each episode, Sam thinks more and more logically about their cases. She is using her skills to learn more about Eddie as well.
Sam can easily tell how much this case is affecting Eddie. She knows he is troubled by not being able to work cases like this as a cop.
The story of why Eddie became a cop is heartbreaking. He faced tragedy as a young boy and was determined to become a cop to make a difference in the world. Instead, he was driven off the force by exactly the kind of cops he was let down by as a child.
Eddie: I miss what being a cop should have been.
Eddie reveals to Sam that he has found a partner in her in a very heartwarming moment. It’s clear Eddie had all but given up on having a partner before he met her. He was beat down by the system and didn’t trust anyone.
While at the beginning their partnership was about Eddie helping Sam, now it has become a two-way street. They both care about each and are making each other better people.
