20 TV Characters Who Really Need a Hug

9-1-1, Arrow, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Castle Rock, Chicago Fire, Grey's Anatomy, How To Get Away With Murder, Lists, Lost, Preacher, Riverdale, Supernatural, Teen Wolf, The 100, The Affair, The Magicians, The Walking Dead

There are always going to be characters that we either love or don’t. The ones we love, and even some of the ones we dislike, end up pulling at our heartstrings.

These are the characters that deserve to be grabbed through the TV and given all our love. We want to give them hugs above all else, whether it’s because of tragedy or lack of love and respect by their peers.

We want to show our love for these characters. So we compiled a list, in no particular order, of those we believe are the most in need of a hug.

Fair warning there may be spoilers, so tread lightly.

1. Cole Lockhart – The Affair

Let’s just start this list off with a character who most recently needs a hug. Cole just found out that his ex-wife, Alison, has been found dead. This is just another notch in the long list of tragedies to befall the man.

Since the beginning of The Affair, Cole has been dealt harsh blows to his emotional psyche. To start it off, his young son is killed and then his brother. To cope with it all, Cole goes down the dark road of drugs and dealing.

He is finally getting his life back together and working on his relationship with Alison and his daughter, Joan. Now, he has to deal with the reality that his reunion with Alison is not going to happen.

His anguish and pain throughout the series makes us love and hate him in equal measure.

2. Sawyer Ford – LOST

Where do we begin with Sawyer? While he is a former con artist, even that can’t fully define him. We can’t dislike him in the slightest because his negative life choices were for good reason.

As a child, he watched his father destroy their family because of a con man. So, he spends the rest of his life trying to find the man. This leads him on the path towards Oceanic Flight 815.

While on the island, Sawyer is nothing less than a true leader and a voice of reason. He helps the group to survive and ultimately escape.

In the end, he gets love, but not before he suffers more tragedy at the hands of the island.

3. Cheryl Blossom – Riverdale

Miss Blossom may on the outside appear to be a mean girl, tough as nails, and unafraid. However, as we have since learned, she uses this persona to guard her own heart.

She has suffered through the tragic death of her brother only to find it was her own father who orchestrated it all. Then her father kills himself.

Following their deaths, Cheryl has had to build up her walls in order to keep from going insane. She doesn’t have the support of her mother or uncle. In fact, she’s her only advocate, and as a teen, she deserves so much more than that.

4. Jack Harkness – Torchwood

Living forever you encounter an abundance of love but also a fair amount of tragedy. When you live forever working to save the universe, that balance is skewed more towards tragedy.

Jack loves humans and their relentless amount of hope, much like his dear friend The Doctor. This passion for humans is what leads him to lead Torchwood Three through centuries of adventures while he awaits the return of The Doctor.

During the time of Torchwood, viewers watch as Jack becomes a family with his coworkers, even falling in love with Ianto Jones. On the flip side, we also watch him suffer through immeasurable losses as many people he loves die.

5. Brian “Otis” Zvonecek – Chicago Fire

Everyone loves the good guy. But, we don’t always outwardly show how much we love him.

Otis is that guy. He’s sweet, loving, and always wants to do the right thing. He just wants to put as much goodness into the world that he can.

Unfortunately for him, this means he constantly gets overlooked or taken advantage of, even his best friend takes advantage from time to time. All he deserves is love sweet love.

6. Abby Griffin – The 100

When it comes to badass women, Abby Griffin is definitely tops. However, most badass women don’t always get the full appreciation or compassion they deserve.

Abby has worked tirelessly to make sure that the people under her care, as a doctor, remain safe and relatively happy. She strives for a better world for everyone.

Despite all her efforts, she isn’t able to find a solution for Marcus, the love of her life, who is dying. Get this woman a vacation and a huge hug filled with all the love.

7. Derek Hale – Teen Wolf

DerekHale 20 TV Characters Who Really Need a Hug

Any fan of Teen Wolf, no matter their favorite character, will resoundingly agree that there is one character on the whole show who needs a hug above all else. I am of course talking about Derek Hale.

He has carried the weight and guilt of being instrumental in the fire that killed his whole family since he was a teen. Now that he is a young adult and has to be a mentor for a new group of teens his feelings have to be pushed down.

He continues to try and help where he can, but more often than not tragedy follows him. Whether it is failing as an alpha and losing the power or watching all he cares about fall apart or die, Derek has seen it all.

And no one has even tried to understand or comfort him — unless you count that moment between him and Stiles after Boyd’s death, which most fans do.

8. Cassidy – Preacher

If there is ever a need for down on their luck, lonely vampires then Cassidy is the defacto choice. He has it all booze, drugs, and violence. All just to avoid thinking about all the times he’s fucked up in his unnaturally long life.

These traits should probably make fans of Preacher hate him, but instead, he’s a beloved staple.

It’s definitely the grit and snark that makes his behavior a bit more easy to bear. Well, that and the obvious sadness that lingers around him whenever he thinks no one else is looking.

9. Rosa Diaz – Brooklyn Nine-Nine

From the first moments of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 1 Episode 1, “Pilot,” audiences are drawn to the grouchy, street-smart cop on the force. Mostly because she scoffs and rolls her eyes at nearly everyone she works with.

Haven’t we all been there before.

As time goes on we realize just how fragile and sensitive she really is. Her tough exterior is simply there to survive her job with as few scars as possible.

Rosa is a multi-layered human that adds a multitude of excitement to an already hilariously, exciting show. While at first, it seemed she didn’t have much more to her than face value, she has proven time and time again that you don’t know the story within unless you read more than the cover.

10. Bobby Nash – 9-1-1
9-1-1 Season 1 Episode 3 Next of Kin 20 TV Characters Who Really Need a Hug

We may have only just started our journey with Bobby, but based on what we know so far, the man is deserving of all our love and appreciation. His story just proves that even the biggest of heroes have the darkest of demons.

He lost his whole family in a fire and has struggled his way up from the ashes of that through personal setbacks and roadblocks. Only to realize that years of sobriety doesn’t mean anything if the wrong moment comes along.

Anything can trigger a relapse, but it takes true strength to dust yourself off from that and keep pushing forward. While Bobby definitely has the support and love of his colleagues, it doesn’t hurt to give him any hug we can spare.

He has a long road ahead.

  • Yes agree with you and thanks for articulating the problems with whole weird Bryan backstory. You know what really bothered me about this episode? Having Muriel sit on an office chair placed on a box ( plinth) – is this is kid’s theater-? And then leaving her there for whole episode! Wow – Did no one think this through? Shouldn’t that spooky Debris infected person be perfect time for big visual drama and effects? What the viewers get is a random woman seated on an office chair mumbling. Gee somehow that visual isn’t grabbing me.
