19 Funniest Moments from ‘Orange is the New Black’ Season 6
Now finishing its sixth season, Orange is the New Black has made a name for itself as a consistent tour de force season after season — always a 13-episode-long novel of a show, gracefully and intricately tracing the stories of hundreds of characters.
Season 6 brought our beloved inmates “to the max,” or to Litchfield’s maximum security prison after the Season 5 riot. This season packed quite the punch when it came to tragic and emotional moments, but the show also remained steady in delivering quality comedic material.
Read on for 19 of our favorite funny moments from Orange is the New Black Season 6!
1. CO Stefanovic’s popcorn

On Orange is the New Black Season 6 Episode 3, “Look Out For Number One,” when federal agents begin to interrogate inmates at the prison, Stefanovic repeatedly attempts to microwave his popcorn in the staff lounge.
Wanting to microwave his popcorn for the perfect amount of time and refusing to let his popcorn be overcooked or undercooked, Stefanovic turns into a childlike character, demanding that he be able to microwave his popcorn. The agents, not wanting to be disturbed, proceed to lock him out.
2. Mendoza’s fake Puerto Rican holidays

On Orange is the New Black Season 6 Episode 2, “Shitstorm Coming,” Mendoza attempts to tell Blanca to incriminate Ruiz to avoid having extra time added. She is forced to use coded language to bypass CO Alvarez, as she is unsure if he understands Spanish. The two of them, along with Adeola, go into the makeshift chapel and must convince Alvarez that they are actually praying.
Mendoza thus begins to make up elaborate and lengthy names of holidays, which she pretends are obscure but precious Puerto Rican Holidays. Alvarez believes her and Mendoza successfully passes on her message to Blanca — but not without hearty commentary for Adeola as well.
3. Caputo’s “dinosaur porn”

On Orange is the New Black Season 6 Episode 2, “Shitstorm Coming,” Caputo — suspended from work — turns to watch porn to kill his time. In the first few episodes of the season, we see him watching a number of videos in which they talk about a “dinosaur cock,” and Caputo naturally has to ask Fig to tell him he himself has a dinosaur cock.
Fig is clearly confused — but the early-in-the-season plants pay off. It’s a bizarre gag that may only have a place on this show, but nevertheless, it fits.
4. Adeola’s rats

Lorna quickly discovers that her quirky new roommate, Adeola, houses a family of rats in her vent. At first, Lorna is disgusted, but then she grows fond of the little rat families that occupy their room.
However, the humor comes from Lorna and Adeola referring to them by human names and as if they’re a family, which confuses many of the inmates. The rats also eventually pay off when they’re used to disrupt the cheese-packing in the kitchen.
5. The radio show

The radio starts off as a gag with an overzealous inmate doing her own show, but after Black Cindy and Flaca become the new hosts, it turns into a comedic recurring segment.
Dubbed “Flava to the Max” (after the portmanteau of Flaca and Tova, Black Cindy’s Jewish convert name), the two newfound friends laugh and banter their way through most of the season. Many clever bits come off the radio show, but it’s also the friendship between the two women that will grow on you.
6. Lorna’s pregnancy

Lorna is proud of her pregnancy with Vinnie, but it’s the comedic language that comes of it that is worth watching. She constantly throws out a plethora of unique baby names, which Nicky subsequently shuts down.
To boot, she acts with such care towards her precious cargo, but it doesn’t even seem like she really knows what pregnancy and giving birth will end up being like. Lorna’s pregnancy also gets her and Nicky out of a couple of tight spots with a few clever words.
7. Caputo and Fig’s rocky relationship

Caputo and Fig may not seem like the most compatible people, and in many ways, that’s true. Although their blossoming yet somewhat toxic relationship continues to grow in Season 6, it’s the shaky parts that become the most humorous.
Fig refuses to open up, while Caputo lavishes her with praise and romance, which she shuts down almost immediately. Deep down, there’s probably something there, but there’s more humor in their relationship than true love.
8. Adeola’s “Cult of the Holy Virgin”

Adeola’s presence this season has made for a number of hysterical gags, including her constant referencing of the “Cult of the Holy Virgin.” She first brings up this group on Orange is the New Black Season 6 Episode 2, “Shitstorm Coming,” but it’s referenced again all the way on Orange is the New Black Season 6 Episode 9, “Break the String.”
Although all of the inmates laugh at her and tell her that it isn’t real, her insistence and her belief in the religious “Cult of the Holy Virgin” is both admirable and comedic, because she believes in it wholeheartedly.
9. Nutri Herbal

Aleida’s involvement in the Nutri Herbal pyramid scheme turns from deadly into something both clever and funny. Although she fights to sell her products to unsuspecting individuals, the guards’ actual enjoyment of the Nutri Herbal smoothies becomes a recurring comedic moment.
Who really knows what’s in Nutri Herbal, but the references to Aleida’s bizarre drink become some of the most precious moments of the season.
10. Pudding as a prized possession

Pudding and fresh fruit are seen being brought into Florida, one of the blocks at Litchfield max. Pudding thus becomes a prized possession, bartered and traded among inmates as well as an object of desire for many, especially Red. In some ways, it’s a bit sad — but in many ways, the monetary value of pudding at the maximum security prison is a point of hilarity.
