Luke Perry, KJ Apa, and Cole Sprouse Talk Archie’s Arrest and What It Means for ‘Riverdale’ Season 3 [Video]
At San Diego Comic-Con, we spoke with Riverdale stars Luke Perry, KJ Apa, and Cole Sprouse during a roundtable interview about the shocking ending of Season 2 and what to expect when the show returns in October.
For Jughead Jones, Riverdale Season 2 was undoubtedly a transformative one. He fully embraced his role as the leader of the Southside Serpents, eventually taking over when his dad, FP, officially retired (for real this time).
As an actor, portraying the character as he went through these changes was very fulfilling and enjoyable for Sprouse.

“Jughead had flaws this season — obvious flaws — that got him almost killed. He wasn’t this immediately lovable, nothing-wrong-with-him character like he was in Season 1,” Sprouse said. “It’s nice to be challenged that way as an actor. It’s always enjoyable seeing what trouble Jughead got up to.”
“I think he got his ass kicked four or five times since last season. He was just a magnet for getting his ass kicked!” he continued.
Obviously, the biggest development of the Riverdale Season 2 Finale was Archie’s arrest for the murder of Cassidy, the townie who tried to rob the gang when they were at the Lodges’ lake house. Going into Season 3, each of the characters will be dealing with this shocker in their own way.
“I don’t dig it,” Perry joked. “I just don’t like it at all. My whole life is about him and keeping him out of situations very much like that. So I’m not happy with Hiram and not happy with the situation in general. You’re about to see Fred open up a can [of whoop-ass].”

Apa said that Archie’s arrest will also put his relationship with Veronica under tremendous strain.
“It’s definitely going to put his relationship with Veronica to the test. If he goes away for a while, they’ll be separated for a long time,” he said. “So it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.”
“And I don’t trust Veronica,” Perry added, as Apa and Sprouse chimed in with their agreement. “We don’t find Veronica to be very trustworthy.”
