Grey’s Anatomy Season Finale Review: All of Me (Season 14 Episode 24)

Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

The Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 finale brings happy endings, new beginnings, and not a single death. It’s not only a satisfying way to wrap up Arizona and April’s stories, but it makes for one of the best wedding episodes I’ve seen on years.

Because while Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 Episode 24, “All of Me,” is the last time we’ll see Arizona or April, it’s also the perfectly imperfect wedding of Alex and Jo — one that’s been a long time coming.

The wedding brings one disaster after another, but it’s all lighthearted and fun (even when the wedding planner and the mother of the *other* bride are both in danger).

We’re reminded of everything we love about Jo and Alex together. And if you were still on the fence about how you felt about their relationship, you likely aren’t anymore.

From sneaking off to have sex in a shed before the actual wedding ceremony (turns out, they aren’t entirely alone, either) to simply being able to make the best out of a bad situation on their wedding day, you have to root for them — and be inspired by them.

These two have so many cute moments on this episode, and it’s just a lot of fun to watch.

The most beautiful part of it, though, is how they actually get married. It’s such a sweet detail that when it’s all said and done, Meredith is the one who officiates their ceremony.

Her friendship with Alex is so deep. They’re family, and nothing could be more fitting.

I do love that moment when Amelia asks Meredith if she’s upset because she’s secretly in love with him, which seems like a nod to the fans who’ve been dying to see the two of them wind up together. Meredith sets that straight right away, though.

It’s the worry she has over losing Alex, after having lost Derek and Cristina, now that she knows Jo has been accepted to a fellowship in Boston that has her upset.

That idea of found family is always at the heart of Grey’s Anatomy, and Alex has been a part of Meredith’s now longer than anyone else.

Jo and Alex aren’t the only couple who get married on this finale, though. In a sweet, romantic, and sudden turn of events, Matthew and April decide to get married when the officiate finally arrives (missing the original bride and groom).

Jackson and April have some sweet moments that wrap up their story a bit too, because even though their relationship has ended, they’re still family.

And April wants Jackson to be there for her wedding.

April deserves a happy ending, and that’s what she gets, coincidentally, with a wedding that she planned.

By the way, that’s not the first time a character on Grey’s Anatomy has planned someone else’s wedding, only to get married at that wedding themselves. This feels a little like a callback to the wedding Izzie planned for Meredith and Derek.

Talk about full circle, since the people who got married that day were Izzie and Alex…

April’s actual exit could have used a little more attention, however. The explanations happen so subtly that you could nearly miss them, and I’d have liked to have more time spent dealing with the change.

It’s clear this is what her crisis of faith, followed by a near-death experience has been leading up to — she’s going to go out now and really make a difference, so that seems fitting. And it seems satisfying. It just doesn’t quite get enough attention.

There’s one more happy ending, and that’s for Arizona. Not only is she moving to New York where she can stay close to her daughter and getting a chance to work with Dr. Herman on an amazing opportunity, but Callie is single… and she seems to be hoping to rekindle something with her ex-wife.

That’s all subtle too, but Arizona mentions how she smiles every time she gets a text from her, and let’s not forget how she slipped and said Callie’s name when she was high on Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 Episode 20, “Judgment Day.”

What drives all of that home the most is the music. My goodness, no other show knows how to pack a punch with its soundtrack quite like Grey’s Anatomy does, especially when it re-uses music to help tell part of the story.

In this case, it’s from the musical episode, where Callie sings “The Story.” We may not get to see Callie, but we do get to hear her voice singing that song as Arizona gets one more text message that reads, “Can’t wait to see you!”

I’m even getting choked up over it as I write, you guys.

What makes this finale so strong is that it’s focused. It doesn’t get wrapped up in too many side stories. It gives Jo and Alex the attention they deserve for their wedding, and it gives April and Arizona the attention they deserve for their exits. There’s plenty else going on, of course, but everything is connected.

And it’s happy. Grey’s Anatomy is great at making us cry with shocking tragedies, but to bring on the happy tears like this season finale does is a beautiful thing. It’s able to do that because we’re so incredibly invested in these characters and what happens to them. It’s an excellent close to an excellent season.

There is one twist (because there had to be, right?) and it’s one I can’t believe I didn’t see coming.

Teddy is back, and because she’s brought right into surgery as soon as she arrives at the hospital, there’s little explanation as to why. She does finally ask Bailey if there’s a job available, and Bailey has the perfect position — interim chief. Because for once, Bailey is finally going to take some time for herself.

That itself is a twist, especially since Owen and Amelia seem to be rekindling their relationship with one another. But then, there’s the bombshell.

Teddy. Is. Pregnant.

We have to assume that’s Owen’s child she’s carrying, and I can’t even wrap my mind around how complicated things are about to become. It’s certainly setting us up for an interesting 15th season.
