Siren Review: Street Fight (Season 1 Episode 9)
Things get bloody when Donna brings her friends along to kidnap Ryn and take her back to the water on Siren Season 1 Episode 9, “Street Fight.”
The connection between Ben and Ryn is getting stronger and stronger every day, but what does that mean for Ben and Maddie?
I’ve said from the beginning that I don’t want this to become some love triangle game and I have a feeling it’s starting to lean more that way. Ben is now having sex dreams about Ryn, along with continuing to be overly touchy-feely towards her.

I get it, he’s in some siren induced haze from Ryn’s siren song, but this is too much, and I wish that Maddie would see it. I don’t want to say that he’s intentionally watching himself around Maddie, but he seems to get more handsy when Maddie is gone or out of sight.
Donna even notices how he can’t keep his hands off of her. Ben would do good to remember that he’s still in an active relationship with Maddie and all she’s been doing since day one is try to make sure he and Ryn both stay safe. Maddie is a ride or die that Ben doesn’t deserve.
Things seem off with Donna and her buddies from the very beginning. They don’t act like they’re one of her friends, they act like they’re on a mission and they’ll do whatever it takes to finish it. Donna seems visibly concerned when the male mermaid decides to grab Helen Hawkins by the throat to try and intimidate her.

This instance should be Donna’s first clue that they’re here for more than just bringing Ryn back home. If they were indeed there to help Donna they’d be listening to her and doing what she says. Instead, they roll around acting like they have their own agenda and answer to nobody.
All Donna wants is for Ryn to come home, which is why I can’t put too much blame on her for bringing them to help get Ryn. But, at the same time, had Donna just listened to her sister and allowed her to do what she wanted then none of this would’ve happened.
Ryn deserves to live her life how she wants, and that includes choosing when she wants to be in the water and when she wants to be on land.

SEDALE THREATT JR
I understand that Xander is grieving his father’s death, and he wants revenge, but he’s unhinged. Helen Hawkins informing Xander that the aggressive mermaids are in town is what pushes him over the edge.
I love Xander’s character, but I don’t like this little story arc that’s playing out right now. He’s being dangerous, reckless, and is putting everyone in danger because he isn’t thinking correctly. The sheriff should take Xander in instead of letting him go because it’s clear that he needs some help, and it’s not a bad thing to admit.
I hope that Xander snaps out of whatever this is after he shoots Donna. If there is anything that might snap him back into reality, it should be accidentally shooting the wrong person because you’re in a fit of anger and aren’t thinking correctly.

ALEX ROE, SIBONGILE MLAMBO
The series finale looks like it’s going to be a hectic one with Donna’s life hanging on by a thread.
Other Thoughts:
- I love how Ryn asserts her dominance and makes the other mermaids leave town. She is one smart and powerful individual.
- I hope that Decker can save Donna in the finale, and then Donna gets the chance to kill him, so she doesn’t have to worry about him tracking her anymore.
- Helen Hawkins, aka The Mystery, needs to be further explored in the season finale. If not, we deserve at least two Helen-centric episodes in Season 2.
