Suits Review: Hard Truths (Season 7 Episode 11)

Reviews, Suits

Quite honestly, Suits Season 7 Episode 11, “Hard Truths,” feels a bit like we’re in limbo.

The fallout from Donna kissing Harvey is difficult to watch. It certainly wouldn’t make sense for the two of them to ride off into the sunset together after that moment or anything, but Harvey’s anger over it is unbearable.

It also proves that there’s so much more going on with Harvey than we see on the surface.

He lashes out at Donna in a way that’s unfair. Should she have made that impulsive decision, knowing that Harvey was seeing someone? Probably not (even though it made for a romantic TV moment).

But Harvey’s reaction is much too severe — he’s flat-out mean, he questions Donna’s judgment, and he treats her as less than. He even goes so far as to tank an interview because of her.

Harvey’s anger is coming more from just being put in that situation with Paula. He’s mad at himself and he’s conflicted.

(Also, he could have stopped Donna from kissing him. He could have turned his head or something. Just saying.)

And his reactions are all over the place. Not only is he angry with Donna, but his knee-jerk reaction at seeing Paula in his apartment afterward is to ask her to move in with him.

Harvey still needs to process a whole host of emotions here. It’s too bad his therapist can no longer be his therapist.

As much as I enjoy the character development — Harvey Specter is a fascinating character to continue to watch — this is all a bit frustrating. It just doesn’t feel like we’re going anywhere.

To make matters even harder for Harvey, and much of the root of his anger over everything else is that he’s still been coming to grips with losing Jessica and with taking on a new leadership role, and now, he has to take Jessica’s name off the wall.

He and Louis think of every way they can to get Jessica her money and still save their firm, but when it comes down to it, the only way they can is to drag her name.

It’s the last thing Harvey wants to do, and it’s certainly the last thing she deserves.

More grey areas and more hard choices — this firm has reinvented itself and its truth more times than we can count at this point.

Losing Jessica in that way feels more permanent.

Harvey already has abandonment issues, so to take us back to his asking Paula to move in with him after being kissed by Donna feels like a desperate attempt to hold onto something — to hold on to some form of stability.

Meanwhile, Alex gives Mike a case to work on, but what comes from it is so much more interesting than seeing Mike’s lawyering skills at work. It gives Mike and Rachel a chance to work together — and to do so really freaking well.

That, I hope, is going to be the way their story ends. They make a great team and they both prove that they are willing to consider what the other has to say, which ends up being the entire reason they handle the case successfully.

They balance each other, respect each other, and play off of each other in really smart ways.

While Mike suggests they try to work together more often so they can spend time together, Rachel reminds him they should be planning their wedding. Hopefully, we’ll see a balance of both.

  • I thought it was WAY too harsh of Harvey. Yes. he has abandonment issues. YES he has fidelity issues. NO it’s not all about him. He acts like it’s all about him. Donna also wants closure and both Mike and Louis told her to “tell Harvey how she felt” subtly. She just had to take that leap and find out if it’s real. Harvey LOSES it, as we’d all expect. Once that line is crossed, it’s CROSSED. Its over. Donna deserves to know where they stand and she’s conflicted too. For years they have a “should they or shouldn’t they” mentality and she wants to know if this is what it is between them. It seems like Harvey is blaming Donna too much without questioning what motivated her. Louis and Mike are both to blame for encouraging Donna to do it. She didn’t want to. She KNEW it was too risky and it would jeopardize their relationship. Harvey had panic attacks when Donna left him before. Losing her by having her kiss him is too much. It’s partially Mike and Louis both to blame, especially LOUIS that SNAKE as always.
