Shadowhunters Review: The Powers That Be (Season 3 Episode 2)
Lilith’s dark magic takes control of the city and causes trouble for everyone on Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 2, “The Powers That Be.”
The dark magic that Lilith continues to use is making its way throughout the ley lines of New York, and if releasing off angelic energy isn’t enough power to defeat her then I don’t know what is.
It won’t be long before Lilith performs another ritual, making it hard for warlocks everywhere to use magic because they can’t control their powers. So far I like the feeling and vibe that we get from Lilith.

HARRY SHUM JR., MATTHEW DADDARIO
Right now Lilith is this ominous presence who has kept hidden and used demons to do her bidding so she can stay below the shadows and not have to get her hands dirty, but that will change soon.
Now that Jace and Izzy know what the demon working for Lilith looks like they can make plans to capture him or kill him. I get the feeling that Jace is going to try and track the demon down on his own to clear his mind and think other thoughts, but I don’t think that’s smart.
Magnus not being the High Warlock is just plain weird. He is the only warlock for the job, and Lorenzo knows that that’s why he automatically assumes that it’s Magnus who corrupted the ley lines under his home. But, we all know that he is only throwing a massive fit and shaming Magnus because he wants to ruin his reputation. He’s only using his father as a deflection.

JAVIER MUÑOZ
Magnus has already shown Lorenzo up in his own home, and that was just the first day of Lorenzo officially claiming the title. It’s obvious he wants to make sure that the local warlocks wish to go to him and not Magnus.
It’s only the second episode of this season, but I already love the relationship dynamics.
I love that we see more and more of Alec and Magnus cohabitating even though they don’t live with one another.
Last season there was a lot of favoritism when it came to which relationships got to show true growth, not just with a few important scenes, and that’s that – I’m excited that Malec is finally getting the quality time it deserves.

SOPHIA WALKER
Finally we have Simon and Maia together, which makes way more sense than Simon and Clary. Words can’t describe the amount of joy I feel knowing that Simon and Clary won’t be getting back together again.
Simon and Maia are too cute together, and I feel like they fit not because they’re both supernatural, but because they both understand each other and have so many challenges and interests that they have in common.
I love that Maia never backs down from a challenge and will always stand up for what she believes in. When confronted about sleeping with Simon at the Jade Wolf and told that she needs to leave she said hell no and put her foot down. She is not your girl, and she isn’t just some woman you can police around like you own her.
I wish that Izzy would give herself a break from working because it’s clear to see that she’s continuing to beat herself up for her addiction issues and I wish that she would realize that she isn’t weak.
She shouldn’t hold hate in her heart for herself because it was the drugs making her act and feel the way she did and she’s gotten better. She fought and defeated the addiction because she is a survivor.
Other Thoughts:
- Ever since Clary mentioned Maia wearing spandex while wolfing out, it’s all I can think about. It would be absolutely hilarious.
- Alec and Madzie together is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.
- Whatever the Seelie Queen branded Simon with is obviously some sort of defense mechanism. Could she be protecting him?
