Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Review: The Last Day (Season 5 Episode 8)

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Reviews

Although some of the puzzle pieces have begun to fit together as questions have been answered, more queries have been raised regarding the first “pod” of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5.

This in and of itself is not necessarily alarming, however, for the series has been known for its surprising twists and turns, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 Episode 8, “The Last Day,” serves up several shocking moments.

In perhaps the most notable twist, the episode provides us with an unexpected storyline where May falls into a maternal role for Robin, the Inhuman with visions. The two of them grow close over time that, May becomes the only one Robin can confide in, even until her death.

As Robin lays dying, she calls May “mom” — it was a refreshing sight to see May explore more of her emotional side. It’s a side we’ve never really seen of her before, and it’s … a lot different. Remember Bahrain?

May has changed so much since then. Then, her only method of venting involved taking out her emotions in a fight. Now, she faces her emotions head on with dignity and grace. She’s even developed faith and have become comfortable opening up her feelings and thoughts to others.

Speaking of emotional connections, the will-they-again-won’t-they-again between May and Coulson are all at the front of our minds, and that scene where she practically jumps into his arms is enough to make us giddy. I do hope they can find a way to explore their feelings more while in the midst of all the havoc.

Deke, meanwhile, is upset with Sam upon learning that he had the very piece of monolith that once belonged to his father. Coming upon this scene, I’ve developed a theory: what if Deke is the son of someone — or some two — we already know?

While it would be cool if Star-Lord is his father (Deke and Star-Lord are both scavengers), we already know that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t as connected to the films. Deke’s father was exiled to the surface for promoting the S.H.I.E.L.D. prophecy. He has to be connected to Robin somehow — but how?

The only person I can think of is Lance Hunter, who randomly, but serendipitously, resurfaced earlier this season. He knows everything that’s happened, and it makes sense if he’s going by a different name since he was disavowed by S.H.I.E.L.D.

Also, Deke’s mother was executed for being a threat … kind of sounds like Bobbi Morse, right? Deke is the son of Lance and Bobbi. I’m rolling with it … reveling in it even.

Overall, this space saga feels like a snow globe that is being shaken to the point where one doesn’t really know what the clear picture is going to be because all they see are sparkles and snowflakes swirling all around. It’s as if they’re trapped inside Robin’s dream that never stops repeating, no matter how many times they’ve tried. This is one Framework I would never pay for, no matter how cool the costumes.

I’ll be amazed when they get out of it all. They’re agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., after all, and that carries weight.

One other thought before I end this: why is everyone dying/never coming back? What happens to Mack? WHY CAN’T THEY LEAVE SIMMONS ALONE?
