Blindspot Review: Balance of Might (Season 3 Episode 10)
The tension is high now that Jane and Kurt have split up. Blindspot Season 3 Episode 10 “Balance of Might” is taking the Jane and Kurt split hard, but there isn’t time to ruminate on any of the details because the show is serving so many arcs at once.
While the show may have started out as being primarily about Jane, it’s grown to be more about the team. Yes, Jane’s history still plays a role, but there are ensemble arcs that are also being served. It’s good that they’re fleshing out the characters and their relationships, but they’re doing so in a way that compresses what we can learn in an episode.
As a result, several of the Blindspot Season 3 episodes have appeared jumbled and lacking focus as they try to build suspense on multiple fronts.

“Balance of Might” picks up from the events of Blindspot Season 3 Episode 9 “Hot Burning Flames” where Jane and Kurt face what happened in Berlin. The result of which, causes Jane to leave Kurt. The big take away from this episode is that Avery, Jane’s daughter, is not only still alive, but Roman may have set Kurt up.
This really shouldn’t be surprising because it fits Roman’s modus operandi. Back in the season premiere, he says the new tattoos are his way of messing with Jane’s happily ever after.
It makes sense that he’d have tracked down Avery and orchestrated her meeting with Kurt, but how it all went down is still a mystery. That’s what has made the majority of this season entertaining, but painful, to watch. While we may have one small nugget of new information, it just brings up more questions!
For example, if Roman was really behind Avery and Kurt meeting, and the incident that got her “killed” then who has her now?

Before we get to this twist, we have a fair amount of angst where Jane and Kurt are concerned. Not only is it clear that Jane hasn’t forgiven him for keeping the secret, but Kurt is content to chip away at this problem.
To add more complications, Clem is also back in the picture with information on Jane’s daughter. Of course, he’s a day late and a dollar short, because Jane already knows what happened–or, at least she thinks that she does. His reappearance sparks flashback scenes that are interesting but feel out of place in an episode that already has three storylines running through it.
It’s hard to see where Clem fits in the bigger picture. Is he just here episodically? Or is he going to stick around for a few episodes? If it’s the former, I don’t see why he needed to appear here, unless he’s potentially misdirecting Jane to keep Avery hidden.
(And again, I ask: who has Avery?)

Speaking of pieces of Roman’s plan, I am very happy that they are actually doing something with Meg. Reade’s girlfriend could have easily become ornamental. Blindspot’s premise is perfect for a journalist character. I am surprised she wasn’t tapped sooner. However, the fact that Roman hands some Sudanese refugees her business card doesn’t bode well for the character.
However, the fact that Roman hands some Sudanese refugees her business card doesn’t bode well for the character. And her hesitation at having her story on the front page because she’s worried about the attention has me curious as to if Meg is hiding something?
The show even underscores this by pointing out that every time Roman makes a move it’s to expose one of their secrets. If the pattern holds, it’s starting to look like Meg may not be who she says she is. If that’s the case, then Team Weller sure knows how to pick ’em!
Stray Thoughts:
- Zapata’s response to Kurt’s “Why” is priceless.
- The idea that there is money in the aid industry feels so real and very backward. Blindspot has been great at drawing attention to some real-world issues, but often they play a minor role in the story at large. This felt a little more present.
- Meg’s story on expensive coffee seems like the perfect New York City story. At the same time, when she brought up $18 cups of coffee, I thought “only in New York City!” I also kind of wanted her to take the cap off to see if there was some really adorable foam art.
