Chicago Med Review: Trust Your Gut (Season 3 Episode 3)

Chicago Med, Reviews

Chicago MedSeason 3 Episode 3, “Trust Your Gut,” shows us the struggle of the staff using their best judgment while trusting each other’s.

A Crutch vs. A Helping Hand

Dr. Choi’s family dynamics are much different when he compares them to April’s.

She’s always looking out for her little brother Noah, and with that in mind, she’s always looking out for his well-being. That’s her job as a sister, and she does it well. Dr. Choi sees something different; he sees that Noah may be leaning on April too much.

Which is fair — in past seasons, Noah has definitely relied too much on his sister.

But Dr. Choi can’t come to terms with their brother-sister dynamic. He wants Noah to stop relying on April all the time.

Later, Myra comes into the ER with her brother. Their dynamic is not clear until much later, but Eric (the brother) reveals that they were each other’s support systems and that Myra always saw the good in him. This allows Dr. Choi to understand the relationship between April and Noah more. By the end, he has a better understanding and can sympathize with it better.

Despite how poorly Eric’s parents were treating him over the years, they came to realize his drug problem was because he actually has a genetic disorder and that Myra shares the same disorder. Within a minute of discovering this, both mom and dad start apologizing.

Eric, right away, lets both his mom and dad hug him. He forgives them right away and they forgive him.

Family is tricky like that.

April: Doesn’t matter. It’s family; it’s blood.

Trust Yourself vs. Trust Your Colleague

In Dr. Rhodes’ case, he’s still struggling at home with Robin. Whether he’s taking care of himself better is unclear. Dr. Bekker and Dr. Letham show concern, but he brushes off their worries.

It becomes a question of trust between Dr. Bekker and Dr. Rhodes once again. Dr. Bekker needs to trust in her colleague more. Dr. Rhodes has no issues when it comes to trusting his gut. He believes he knows what’s best for his patient.

Even with Dr. Bekker bringing up concerns and doubts, he stands his ground. In the end, his decisions turn out to be the best ones. Ava admits defeat, and Connor survives another day.

How things are between Robin and himself is still unclear.

Someone else who trusts their gut is Alex, Dr. Charles and Dr. Reese’s patient. He is sure there is something in his gut that isn’t supposed to be there. He already tried to cut himself open before he is brought in but tries again with a pen.

It’s such a gross scene, because how do you just cut yourself open? Rather, how do you choose to mutilate yourself twice in one day? Dr. Reese removes his hand and out comes his intestines as well. It’s a moment that is extremely cringe worthy — I had to close my eyes for a second.

The most interesting thing about this case, however, is that he isn’t crazy after all — he is right all along. Dr. Charles has a gut feeling too that there was something beyond schizophrenia.

Alex trusts his gut — literally.

Both of their instincts were right when they find Alex’s absorbed twin in his womb — a twist which is so cool.

The human body is truly fascinating.

Finally, the best for last: #Manstead.

These two are finally having an overnight date. Things, however, don’t go according to plan.

Will heads to the break room to find Natalie asleep on the couch. What’s so adorable about this is that he is not upset in the slightest. Instead, he makes due with the situation. He wraps his arm around her and is content with being her pillow for the night.

I love seeing these two just so happy and finally together. He was willing to shave his beard for her, and he was okay with having their date night on the couch in the break room. These two are #relationshipgoals, and I will go down with this ship.

Bonus: Dr. Choi leaves them be on the couch and turns off the light. He’s happy they’re finally together too. Dr. Choi speaks for all of the #Manstead shippers.

Other Thoughts:

  • Oh, Barry and Maggie have a romantic history! Maggie decides to give him another shot, so hopefully it works out, because Maggie deserves only the best.
  • Poor Dr. Reese — between Dr. Charles being shot and the patient who slashes her tires, she is scared. She doesn’t seem to be as trusting of patients right now. I also worry about the patient who came after her — will she make an even scarier appearance in the future?
  • The new hospital guidelines are a small problem that everyone seems to handle pretty well. Psych is the main money problem, according to Ms. Goodwin. With Dr. Charles and Dr. Reese struggling with their inner demons and their relationship, it’ll be interesting to see how things play out.
  • Dr. Choi and Dr. Manning running to save the liver is INTENSE. Good thing they got there just in time!

  • Thank you! Who was the actress who played Myra’s mom? She looks so familiar, but she’s not in the credits anywhere. Thank you for your help!

  • Does anyone know what season and episode was the story about the boy who thought he was dead and heard voices. Then Dr. Charles did some kind of test on him and he didn’t hear voices anymore?
