The Mick Review: The Divorce (Season 2 Episode 9)

Reviews, The Mick

On The Mick Season 2 Episode 9, “The Divorce,” we get closure for Mickey and whatever the opposite of closure is for Chip.

“The Divorce” is a solid episode. It’s not as funny as most, but it does a lot for two big storylines.

For one, we finally get resolution for Mickey and Jimmy. This is something I’ve been waiting impatiently for. Their relationship has been weird since the truth came out about Jimmy’s butt injury.

For a few weeks it felt like The Mick was ignoring the weirdness for no reason. After “The Divorce” it feels like there was a reason after all.

Mickey and Jimmy were also ignoring that things were weird. After a final attempt at reconciliation (and a bit of an incident with an alley and the police) they realize that it’s not working. “We had a good run, Mick” is the heartbreaking ending to their relationship.

We’re left wondering, however, what happens next. Despite their disfunction, Jimmy and Mickey are essentially parents to the Pemberton kids at this point. It will be interesting to see how The Mick handles their ‘divorce.’

As much as I like Jimmy, if he moves aside, The Mick will really be able to focus on Mickey and Alba as co-parents. That’s basically what they are now, but Alba may be able to shine a bit more with Jimmy out of the picture.

If you stop and think about it, Alba is really the only constant in the lives of the kids. She’s also the most consistently hilarious Pemberton.

Her act as an Uber driver is priceless.

The other storyline that gets major movement on “The Divorce” is Chip’s father situation. A while ago we found out that Chip’s dad isn’t his real dad. Now Chip knows and he’s pretty hilarious about it.

I haven’t ever really loved Chip as a character, but he’s great in this situation. His initial reaction of hitting the metal table is probably the best moment of the episode. He mopes expertly. I wish he’d had a bit more time to do it.

Although, I guess he may now that his real dad doesn’t want to be his dad either.

Although this episode isn’t as funny as some, it does have some brilliant moments. For one, I cringed/loved Jimmy drinking Mickey’s vomit/beer. Chip and his sister kissing also is majorly cringe-worthy and just so Chip. Alba yelling from the “Uber” is icing on the top.

We only get a little of it, but Sabrina answering Ben’s many grown-up questions is a nice undertone that brings some levity to the otherwise heavy topics.

“The Divorce” sets up The Mick well for a more complex, and surely comical, next few episodes. I’m looking forward to them.
