Mom is about a newly sober single mother, Christy, who not only has to support and take care of her two children but now has to deal with her recently sober mom who comes back into her life unexpectedly.

The network sitcom has a surprising level of heart and biting humor, and is an effortless binge that reminds us of what marathoning television shows are all about. And we just can’t get enough of the super talented Allison Janey!

14. Atypical

At first glance, this hit Netflix comedy/drama series looks to be just like every other family focused show before it. However, it’s not called Atypical for nothing.

The show centers on an average American family: Elsa and Doug and their two kids, Sam and Casey. However, their struggles are a bit more than what is first seen. Their oldest child, Sam suffers from Autism. This creates an underlying friction in the family, but at the same time bonds them.

The story focuses not only on how Sam struggles to be a regular teen and go on dates, but also on how his journey affects each family member. Atypical is nothing but heart at its core. All the while, it teaches a valuable lesson about accepting others as they are.

15. The Handmaid’s Tale

Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale stands out as one of the best TV shows of the year. The Hulu series, which won the Emmy Award for best drama this year, is striking as it delves even deeper than the novel does into the dystopian world of Gilead and the women whose lives have been turned upside down.

The performances are powerful, and the story is so addictively compelling that it’s hard to stop watching once you start.

16. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is so good that you can’t stop at just one episode.

It has all of the snappy dialogue that fans have come to love from Amy-Sherman Palladino’s productions, fantastic performances from actors like Rachel Broshanan, Alex Borstein, and Tony Shaloub, plus, it is beautiful to look at. The shots of 1950’s New York, the vintage clothes and the opulent apartments would be enough to hold your attention. But the story itself is amazing.

The reason Mrs. Maisel is so marvelous is that she’s the funniest girl in the room — at a party or on stage — and she and her manager are not going to let anything stop her from making it in comedy. Her jealous ex-husband, controlling parents, and the police alone are not enough to get in the way of this independent woman’s dreams.

  • The list looks fine. I´ve not watched all of the shows, but Travelers is a gem. I´ve just recently found four shows from 2017 that were great too.

Damnation (USA Network), a 1930´s western meets depression and prohibition.
    Ozark (Netflix), a what-would-you-do-if-your-life-depended-on-it scenario.
Godless (Netflix), a slow paced wild west story.
Mr. Mercedes (AT&T), a Dexter meets Chuck detective drama.

All four are great shows of 2017 and a good mix of styles.
