16 Most Binge-Worthy TV Shows of 2017

13 Reasons Why, Best of 2017, Dear White People, Lists, Riverdale, Stranger Things, The Defenders, Younger

There are a few joys in the world greater than snuggling up under the covers, eating your favorite junk food, and binge-watching your favorite show until late at night.

We’ve all been there.

This year, the binge-watching trend continues with so many great shows available for streaming, thanks to services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, and not to mention piled up episodes waiting on your DVR.

Here’s a look at some of the most binge-worthy shows from 2017, in no particular order.

This controversial drama about teen-suicide had the whole internet talking this past Spring. Whether you loved it or hated it, you can’t deny that it was impossible to stop watching.

What made 13 Reasons Why particularly addictive was the itch to hear Hannah’s next tape. Just like Clay, we were at the edge of our seats, waiting to hear the next shocking reveal of what led Hannah down a dark, tragic path.

While we’re not sure what the second season will entail, count us in to be there when it arrives.

2. Dear White People

Dear White People is a stylish and socially savvy dramedy that takes viewers by surprise with how deeply it hits your psyche.

Each episode, or Chapter, is from the point of view of a new character. By the end of Season 1, assumptions made in Chapter I had been turned on their head. You empathize and adore characters like Reggie, who at first seem unlikable.

Dear White People covers complex issues like colorism, cultural appropriation, and police brutality. But it covers these topics like it covers its characters: with a nuanced and nimble understanding of the messiness of reality.

3. Insecure

Insecure is one of the most authentic shows on television right now.

Issa Rae’s comedy about dating, working, and living as a Black woman is as clever as it is funny. Life gets messy for Issa, but what makes the show so great is how she  faces all her challenges with such an identifiable anxiety, that we can’t help root for out girl even as she makes poor decisions.

With only 16 half-hour length episodes available, it’s a quick and a completely captivating binge that’s well-worth your time.

4. Younger

Younger is such a gratifying and hilarious watch that you’ll be hard pressed to step away before you’ve binged all of Season 4.

Younger Season 4 features the will they / won’t they romance and friendship shenanigans that the series excels in providing. It also, though, embraces its ensemble characters and new pairings of characters. In particular, Kelsey and Diana really shine in their Season 4 story arcs.

The series always feels fresh and certain scenes become instant classics. You’ll know it’s one of the most binge-worthy shows of 2017 when you’re on your 4th repeat viewing.

5. The Defenders

Get ready for an epic binge, even if you have never watched any of the other individual shows.

The Defenders is jammed packed with top-notch drama, stylish cinematography, and a diverse cast. Plus, it has the amazing Sigourney Weaver! The series focuses on the individual challenges of the superheroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron first and the dynamics between all of these characters.

Watching their own shows isn’t needed, but there are some plot holes that might not make complete sense if you haven’t seen any of the prior series. Overall, this series packs a punch and is worth the binge!
6. American Vandal

One of the biggest revelations of Netflix this year was American Vandal. The true-crime satire is easily one of the most enjoyable binges of the year.

The premise alone will get you to watch: When a teenage boy is accused of vandalizing dozens of teacher’s cars by drawing penises on them, two student journalists try to crack down on what really happened. It’s hilarious, smart, and all around, an excellent and fast binge.

  • The list looks fine. I´ve not watched all of the shows, but Travelers is a gem. I´ve just recently found four shows from 2017 that were great too.

Damnation (USA Network), a 1930´s western meets depression and prohibition.
    Ozark (Netflix), a what-would-you-do-if-your-life-depended-on-it scenario.
Godless (Netflix), a slow paced wild west story.
Mr. Mercedes (AT&T), a Dexter meets Chuck detective drama.

All four are great shows of 2017 and a good mix of styles.
