Big Little Lies drew us in with its pretty Monterey backdrop, and superb acting and cast.

It’s the story of a group of vastly different women who find support and friendship in the midst of abusive relationships and misogyny. In many ways, this was the perfect show to watch about female empowerment.

With only six episodes, this short binge can easily be watched in one sitting because of how it sweeps you up in its setting, into the lives of these women, and keeps you in their world, even days after you’ve finished watching. Big Little Lies also makes our list of most noteworthy new TV shows from 2017.

8. Travelers

Travelers is a Canadian-made drama that comes from a lot of Stargate SG-1 alumni, including creator and writer Brad Wright. Time travel shows aren’t a new genre, but this extraordinary cast is giving a fresh uplift to the storylines and how they are told.

People might think that its only for sci-fi lovers, but the show focuses around the travelers and how they adapt to life in the 21st century rather than the science of how they got there. The background of the system and missions are unique and often explained in interesting ways, but overall it’s the humanity and curiosity of the travelers that keeps us watching every episode.

9. One Day at a Time

Even though this is technically a reboot of a 1975 show of the same name, One Day at a Time is magnificent all on its own and you won’t be able to stop watching once you’ve started.

We absolutely adore this show because it tackles a lot of social issues, the cast is amazing, and it’s insanely entertaining. The premise of the show is about a newly separated Latina veteran and mom, who is raising her two children with the help of her old-school mom and it has become one of my favorite shows this year.

Because it’s so short (30 minutes long and only 13 episodes), it can be even be binged in a day. (We tried and succeeded).  There are also a lot of powerful moments that resonate with people for different reason, and the only flaw of the show is there aren’t enough episodes of it. Looking forward to Season 2 in 2018!

10. Riverdale

2017 saw the premiere and dominance of teen drama Riverdale. The dreamlike, campy, show can easily attract any viewer looking to turn their minds off and get immersed in the shady town where murder mysteries and amateur sleuthing are the norm.

What can we say? This show is fun and moody and provides much-needed escapism during a terrible year of news.

11. Broadchurch

Broadchurch – Series III

Broadchurch is a crime drama set in a sleepy, beach side town of the same name. While the series is very heavy with its subject matter, the interactions between Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) and Alec Hardy (David Tennant) make it an easy show to binge watch. The acting from the whole cast is superb, including future Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.

The series concluded its run with the third season on Netflix this year.

12. Stranger Things

The super-hit show Stranger Things barely needs an introduction.

The sci-fi drama about friendships and demogorgons returned this year, bigger and better than ever. With new additions to the cast, scarier and more suspenseful scenes, and higher stakes, binging on Season 2 is an exhilarating and addictive ride, not to mention incredibly fun! Stranger Things is what good binge sessions are made up of. The series also makes our list of favorite sci-fi and fantasy TV shows from 2017.

  • The list looks fine. I´ve not watched all of the shows, but Travelers is a gem. I´ve just recently found four shows from 2017 that were great too.

Damnation (USA Network), a 1930´s western meets depression and prohibition.
    Ozark (Netflix), a what-would-you-do-if-your-life-depended-on-it scenario.
Godless (Netflix), a slow paced wild west story.
Mr. Mercedes (AT&T), a Dexter meets Chuck detective drama.

All four are great shows of 2017 and a good mix of styles.
