Supergirl: 4 Super Moments and 3 Not So Super Moments from “Crisis on Earth X, Part 1” (Season 3 Episode 8)
Supergirl Season 3 Episode 8, “Crisis on Earth-X, Part 1,” kicks off the latest epic DC crossover between Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow.
Here are the highs and lows of “Crisis on Earth-X, Part 1.”
SUPER MOMENTS
1. That Awkward Morning After Scene
I had my concerns about Alex/Sara before watching, but every scene between them in this crossover is absolutely gold. In fact I think these two are the best part of “Crisis on Earth-X.”
Sara: How are you? How’s your butt?
Alex is delightfully awkward, Sara is beautifully shameless, and Kara is all of us, happily amused and impressed.

2. Alex and Sara Punching Nazis
Right off the back of their one night stand, these two are a Nazi-punching vision. They both have totally different fighting styles, but Alex and Sara work flawlessly with each other. Seeing two queer women go hand to hand against some of history’s worst villains, and seeing them win, is a real inspiration.
3. Kara Singing
Melissa has a lovely singing voice so it’s always a pleasure when she gets to use it through Kara. Kara singing at Barry and Iris’ wedding really reminds us of the friendship between these heroes. It’s always nice when they get to be super together, but it’s an extra treat when we get to see them just be friends.

4. Barry’s Vows
I’ve only ever known Barry from his appearances on Supergirl, but his admission that he’s written 38 single spaced pages of vows is just another in a long list of reasons to love him. Barry is a ball of pure sunshine and his love for Iris is really beautiful. Thank goodness these two get to actually tie the knot at the end of the day!

NOT SO SUPER MOMENTS
1. Killing James
James Olsen has been sidelined for the past two seasons of Supergirl, so it would have been great to see him more integrated into this crossover. But starting a massive crossover about a world where the Nazis won by killing one of the few black men on these shows is frankly horrible.
The way that James’ role has been minimized reeks of racist undertones, and bringing him into the crossover just to kill him like this is definitely a bridge too far.

2. All the Nazis
I get that The CW and the Supergirl writers are all trying to be edgy and topical and relevant to our current political climate, but this isn’t the way to do it.
The Holocaust was one of, if not the darkest moment in human history and it should never be romanticised or used as an allegory for entertainment. This entire episode could have been made virtually the same by making them generic evil doppelgangers.

3. Turning Our Heroes Into Nazis
On top of the tone deaf and insensitive use of “a world where the Nazis won” Supergirl and the other crossover components had the audacity to turn Kara and Oliver into Nazis themselves. Seeing Kara dressed as an SS officer and spouting Nazi ideology genuinely breaks my heart.
I know that Earth-X and the parallel Nazi world is a part of DC comics, but it’s a part that should have been left in the past. Turning Kara into this, even in a parallel universe, is harmful to the Jewish community, to the LGBTQ community, to people of color, and countless others who wouldn’t be alive in a world where the Nazis won.
I’m so disappointed in Supergirl for using Kara Danvers this way.
