Dominique Provost-Chalkley and Katherine Barrell Talk Wynonna Earp Season 2 and Wayhaught [Video]
We caught up with Wynonna Earp‘s Dominique Provost-Chalkley and Katherine Barrell at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about Season 2 and the best ship in Purgatory, Wayhaught.
Season 2 has seen an expansion of Barrell’s character, Nicole Haught. She isn’t just Waverly’s girlfriend. She’s her own person trying to advance her career, protect this town, and get to know the people in it.
One of those people just so happens to be Wynonna.
Barrell was particularly excited to see her character bonding with Wynonna and letting loose. She explained, “I think Nicole’s in control so much. It was fun to see a side of her that was trying to be in control but just didn’t have the capacity to do it. That was great.”

This season also saw Provost-Chalkley being challenged as an actress in her role as Waverly Earp. She was possessed, had to sing, and broke out into dance in that cheerleading outfit.
When asked if those scenes made her nervous, Provost-Chalkley said, “I think with the singing and dancing, because I was the only person doing it, you just feel a bit vulnerable because we’re all actors and we do that everyday. But then it’s suddenly like you’re gonna be standing on a stage with a bunch of extras and sing a song. It’s really nerve wrecking.”
And what calms her nerves? The fans. The Earper community has been not just supportive of Provost-Chalkley and Barrell, it’s been supportive of the relationship their characters are developing with each other.
When asked about those Wayhaught fans, Provost-Chalkley gushed, “They really are the most incredible fans. And every time I speak to anybody in LGBT community that thanks me, I thank them back because I feel like they’ve been just so open and welcoming. And that has made this whole experience ten times better.”
Barrell echoed her enthusiasm and love for Wayhaught fans by saying, “I wanted to put something good into the world and it just felt like being a part of Wayhaught and this whole explosion has been…I feel very lucky. It’s very fulfilling to feel like there’s been such a positive thing that has been put out [into the world].”
