Killjoys Review: Necropolis Now (Season 3 Episode 6)

Killjoys, Reviews

On Killjoys Season 3 Episode 6, “Necropolis Now,” Team Awesome Force turns to the Nine for help. Fighting a war against Hullen is expensive, and, apparently, asking for help is super boring.

This is definitely a filler episode. Nothing really happens on the Hullen war front, which is disappointing especially since Killjoys Season 3 Episode 5 ended with such a bang (literally).

Aneela made her move, RACs were destroyed, a lot of Killjoys lost their lives, so you would think that Team Awesome Force would be stepping up their game and making a bold move, but no, it’s time to take a step back and re-group.

Dutch: Tough love is supposed to have some actual love in it, you know.

D’av: Sorry, solider Da’vin is kind of a dick.

All the momentum that the Hullen war (or prepping for it) had built up stalls during this hour. Suddenly, we find ourselves back mourning Pawter and trying to win the favor of the Nine.

While it is nice to see Dutch have her doubts and watch Team Awesome Force try to amass more support for the cause, there has to be a better way of doing it without delivering such a snooze fest of an episode.

Okay, yes, I still miss Pawter, but that does not mean I want to spend time with her sister, Louella, who has decided to give mass murder a spin. There had to be a better way to bring back Pawter’s memory and Johnny’s grief than by making Louella a killer.

By bringing up Pawter in this manner, we are thrown backwards, story-wise. Instead of focusing on the war ahead and progressing that storyline, “Necropolis Now” revisits the past. It just does not work.

Johnny: I’d say I’m impressed, but I try not to compliment mass murderers.

Once again, Aneela’s storyline is where all the action is.

The twist that Aneela’s not actually in charge is absolutely amazing and completely unexpected. She’s not really the Commander; she’s the prisoner.

This is why she has Brynn, whose job entails watching Aneela, even when Aneela’s having sex with Kendry. That sounds like one really, really awkward job. I hope she gets paid well.

Suddenly, the fact that Aneela can kill people and not have a the threat of a revolt makes sense.

I mean come on, if your leader was prone to homicidal tendencies at the drop of a hat, wouldn’t you try to overthrow her? But if it’s your prisoner, someone that you need to get information from, then you have to indulge her murderous streaks.

This is a game changer of a twist, and it makes us re-think not only how we view Aneela, but how we view the Hullen as well.

Previously, Aneela has appeared to be the head of the Hullen. We’ve come to believe this not only because she’s called the Commander by the Hullen on her ship, but also because Team Awesome Force has targeted her; she’s the big bad.

We’ve been trained to believe that if Team Awesome Force defeats Aneela, then the Hullen fall. But now that is clearly not the case.

There’s some higher ranking Hullen that are pulling the strings. They are using Aneela to learn from her because while she isn’t really the Commander, she’s still special.

Granted, we do not really know the full extent of Aneela’s special powers nor do we know anything else about these higher ranking Hullen, but right now, this is all exciting. I can’t wait to learn more about the Hullen hierarchy. What did you think about this twist?
