Tales of Westeros: 15 Possible ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Offs
Game of Thrones is coming an end. That doesn’t mean that HBO is done with this world that George R.R. Martin has created, however, because they are actively looking for a spin-off to take the series’ place once it ends.
Here are some possibilities that could make good series.
1. Robert’s Rebellion
This is at the top for a reason: It is by far the most obvious choice.
As book and show fans will no doubt already know, Robert’s Rebellion is the most direct prequel to the series we currently find ourselves that deals with Robert Baratheon’s war against the Targaryens over Rhaegar Targaryen allegedly (but not really) abducting Lyanna Stark, who was supposed to be married to Robert.
The war ended with Robert, Ned Stark, and Jon Arryn (amongst many, many others) crushing the Targaryens nearly out of existence and Robert installed as on the Iron Throne.
The biggest problem with Robert’s Rebellion is that we essentially know everything we need to at this point — minus some plot points that might still emerge in the series – about this war. It would be the closest to what we already have of Game of Thrones.
2. Blackfyre Rebellion
There were multiple Blackfyre Rebellions, but for the sake of simplicity we’re going to stick with the first one.
Set 100 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, the Blackfyre Rebellion deals with the civil war between King Daeron II Targaryen and Daemon I Blackfyre, his half-brother.
This would essentially be the more war-centric part of Game of Thrones.
3. Nymeria
Arya Stark doesn’t name her direwolf after you unless you are at least a little bit amazing.
Nymeria was a warrior queen and princess of Rhoyne, until the Valyrians — the ancestors of the Targaryens – came and conquered it. Nymeria, in turn, took her people and sailed to an island that would later be known as the Isle of Women. She then sailed ten thousand ships to Dorne, made an alliance with a Martell, and conquered Dorne like the BAMF that she is.
A show adaptation of this would essentially be Battlestar Galactica on the sea with a bunch more women. What more does one need?
4. Doom of Valyria
Out of all the potential Game of Thrones that could eventually come about, the Doom of Valyria is the one with the most freedom.
Hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones took place, there was a land called Valyria. It was the pinnacle of civilization ruled by dragon rulers. One day, for reasons that are not at all clear, it went the way of Atlantis and was obliterated by earthquakes and -probably – volcanoes.
The premise would be pretty simple: witness the last years of Valyria before it is obliterated. Since it isn’t definitively spelled out what happened to Valyria, the series would have a lot of room to roam and possibly even explore the cause of its collapse.
5. Lyanna Mormont
If there’s any one person that could reach the end of Game of Thrones unscathed, it would be Lyanna Mormont. It’s a foregone conclusion.
Naturally a series revolving around her ruling Bear Island as a teenager is immensely promising. Where do we sign up and who do we send our money to?
6. Dunk and Egg
One of the most popular options for a spin-off, Dunk and Egg tells the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, who would eventually become King Aegon V Targaryen.
This would be based on the three novellas by George R.R. Martin so there would certainly be story enough to cover a full-fledged series.
7. Aegon’s Conquest
The premise for this one is simple yet ever so expansive: how Aegon Targaryen — along with his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys – conquered the Seven Kingdoms, minus Dorne, and set up the long-running dynasty of the Targaryens as Westerosi rulers.
8. The Night’s King
Not to be confused with The Night King, who we’ve seen sauntering about north of the Wall on Game of Thrones, The Night’s King was, according to legend, the 13th Commander of the Night’s Watch who fell in love with essentially a female White Walker from north of the Wall.
He married her, styled himself as The Night’s King and her the Night’s Queen, and sacrificed his Brothers of the Watch for thirteen years before being defeated by the King-Beyond-The-Wall and the Starks.
As a concept, this might only be good for two seasons, but what a fascinating two seasons that would be.
9. Andal Invasion
Thousands of years before Game of Thrones, the Children of the Forest and the First Men — the original settlers of Westeros — lived in peace with one another. That is, until the Andals from across the sea came and mess it all up. They killed the First Men and Children alike and drove the latter back to the wall where they stayed in hiding from men ever since.
A telling of how the Children dealt with this impending could be quite interesting.
10. Davos Origin
Let’s assume, if we will, that Robert’s Rebellion doesn’t get made. If that happens, we could lose a potentially great part of that story which is (Ser) Davos Seaworth providing aid to Stannis Baratheon at Dragonstone and the beginning of the former pirate’s service, knighthood, and loss of fingers.
It could start as Davos as a pirate and work up to his reticent involvement in Robert’s Rebellion and into the previously mentioned timely arrival at Dragonstone.
11. Game of Thrones: Direwolf Edition
Imagine, if you will, a retelling of all of the events of Game of Thrones, but from the perspectives of the Direwolf. Woof, talk about an exercise in masochism.
12. Symeon Star-Eyes
Symeon Star-Eyes was a legendary (maybe) knight that lost both of his eyes and placed sapphires in the sockets instead and would supposedly get into adventures. Essentially, he was the Game of Thrones version of Zatoichi. Just try saying that doesn’t sound appealing.
13. Syrio Forel
Syrio Forel may have died (or maybe not?) but we can still witness his life as the First Sword of Braavos and hear more about him going on about what we’re supposed to say to death. Who wouldn’t like that?
14. Dance of the Dragons
This is perhaps the possibility with the most promise.
Not to be confused with the fifth Game of Thrones book, Dance of the Dragons was a civil war between Aegon II and his half-sister Rhaenyra over the succession to power. Neither won and the crown passed to Rhaenyra’s son, Aegon III.
Filled with political intrigue, double crossing, and lots of war, this would have a lot of the same feel and tone of Game of Thrones while still having a good deal of freedom since it doesn’t affect the world a great deal going forward.
15. Westeros Horror Story
Take a page out of Ryan Murphy’s book and do an anthology series set all across Westeros, the Narrow Sea, and Essos for stories that don’t have the longevity of some of these other tales and legends. Truly, the possibilities are endless.
