Shadowhunters Review: A Dark Reflection (Season 2 Episode 17)

Reviews, Shadowhunters

Everyone is facing their own battles on Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 17, “A Dark Reflection,” as Izzy has to train Max for his first mission, Simon and Maia work out their relationship, and Clary comes face to face with Jonathan.

On Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 16, “Day of Atonement,” Maia and Simon had a moment, which ended up with Simon thinking that suddenly he and Maia are talking, only to be shut down when asking Maia out on a date. In his defense, I got the same vibe from the both of them as she kisses his cheek goodbye.

Simon is doing everything right – he’s thinking of romantic, but elaborative ideas for dates, so it’s not something cliché. He’s taking an interest in what she likes to do, what she’s passionate about. But, sometimes that doesn’t always work, and it’s okay.

By the end of the episode, Maia and Simon work it out and agree to go on a date, but even if they hadn’t, I would’ve been okay with it. I think that in either position – girlfriend or just friend – the both of them would be a perfect fit for one another.

Maia doesn’t have a whole lot of friends; she only has Luke as someone who is there for her non-stop. Simon is crossing that boundary and is becoming more for her, and it’s scary because the last time she let a guy close it ended horribly. It’s the perfect move for Maia.

Maia and Simon becoming closer means that she’ll be more involved with what’s happening around her. She’ll begin growing closer with others the more she is around them. Maia and Simon not getting on the right foot is why Maia finally gets to meet Izzy, and that’s a major plus.

Izzy and Maia are both strong-willed, courageous, and fierce women. Now that they’ve been introduced and had a sit-down conversation I expect more scenes between them. I’m all here for strong women connecting and protecting one another.

Speaking of Izzy, I think that her being over protective of Max is a sweet, kind thing. Max may have graduated at the top of his class, gotten his runes, and be a fast shadowhunter but he’s still her baby brother.

Alec is, understandably, fighting Izzy on being too protective because they had done the same exact thing when they were his age, but he also needs to see it from Izzy’s point of view. Max almost died the last time he was out in the field because he wasn’t properly trained and Alec wasn’t the one who had to watch it. It was Izzy.

As much as I love Malec, Alec totally crosses a line by not telling Magnus about the soul sword not being with the Clave. And, he has no right to be mad at Magnus for storming out and being hurt by his actions.

Magnus has opened up with Alec more than he has with anyone in years so for him to have been lied to right in his face is like a punch to the gut coming from someone he loves. Alec is going to have to learn that when you’re in a relationship, it can’t be just business and relationship. You have to mix the two some; otherwise, things start to get hairy.

One thing that I had a good amount of distaste for is when Jonathan kisses Clary. She may not know that Sebastian is Jonathan, but he sure as heck does, and that is crossing the line. We already had to put up with thinking that Jace and Clary were incest, but this actually is, and I hope that it doesn’t happen again.

Other Thoughts:

  • Maia talking about sleeping with Jace to Izzy is by far the funniest moment of the episode.
  • Max finding out the truth about Jonathan before anyone else is such a shock. With the ending of the season coming full force is there a possibility that they could kill Max off?
  • Magnus turning his back on Alec and telling the Seelie queen about the soul sword is one of my worst nightmares. I hope that Luke can talk some sense into him.
  • Getting to see Simon sitting back and writing music is refreshing.
