25. Damon sacrifices himself

27 Most Memorable Twists On ‘The Vampire Diaries’ - Part 5

No matter what you thought about the love triangle with Elena, the true love story was always between Stefan and Damon. With so much history between them, their relationship has grown leaps and bounds from where they were in Season 1.

With Stefan now human, his life was more fragile than ever. After the Devil gave Damon the worst ultimatum ever, Stefan’s life or Elena’s life, Damon chose to sacrifice himself instead. The look on Stefan’s face said everything. Luckily this death didn’t stick either.

After killing the Devil, the gang was sure they destroyed Hell. Back from Hell himself, Kai crushed that dream by revealing someone had taken the Devil’s place as leader.

That person was none other than Katherine. We’ve yet to find out how she climbed her way to the top. But one thing is certain, you can’t keep a bad girl down!

27. Vicki rings the Maxwell bell

Katherine’s arrival seemed imminent, especially once Stefan and Caroline moved up their wedding. However, instead of causing destruction herself, Katherine sent Matt’s dead mother and sister to do her dirty work.

Watching Vicki return from the dead in order to destroy Mystic Falls felt a bit out of character, especially since she wasn’t an evil character before she died. As she rang the Maxwell bell, Bonnie collapsed to the ground, her fate uncertain as we head into the final episode of The Vampire Diaries.

Which of these twists surprised you the most? Are you ready for the series finale? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!
