13. The cure for vampirism

When the cure was first introduced, most fans probably didn’t think it would have a lasting presence in the show’s narrative. Once a cure for vampirism was revealed, it became a race to see who could get their hands on it first.

The cure has been passed around, forced into, and kept safe by several characters. While some characters like Rebekah and Elena wanted to take the cure, others like Caroline had no desire to have it for themselves.

14. Elena burns down the house after Jeremy’s death

Jeremy’s death by Silas draining him of his blood and snapping his neck led to one of the darkest moments in the show’s history. Jeremy was the only family Elena had left in the world.

Unable to handle the death of her brother, Elena shut off her humanity and burned her house to the ground with Jeremy’s body inside. Jeremy’s death had so much emotional weight to it, that I was disappointed to see such great writing put to waste when he was resurrected later on.

15. Hayley’s pregnant with Klaus’ baby

The last thing Klaus expected from his one night stand with werewolf Haley was a baby on the way. When Klaus activated his werewolf side, he also created a loophole for a vampire to have a child.

The revelation Klaus was going to be a father pushed his character down an unexpected and exciting path. More importantly, this reveal served as the catalyst for the spin-off, The Originals.

16. Katherine is forced to take the cure

In a fight between doppelgängers, only one could win. When it seemed like Katherine had the upper hand, Elena bested her by shoving the cure into her mouth.

While Elena was hoping to use the cure herself, she had to use it against her. Therefore, Katherine became the one thing she truly detested… being human.

17. Bonnie dies while bringing Jeremy back to life

How many times has Bonnie died on this show? Too many to remember. However, Bonnie’s death while trying to bring Jeremy back to life was pretty darn emotional.

Her determination to bring him back was heartfelt and it technically worked. Unfortunately, Bonnie didn’t anticipate losing her own life in the process. But as we know, death is rarely permanent in this fictional world, so Bonnie wasn’t dead for long.

18. Stefan is Silas’ doppelgänger

No matter what you thought about the Silas/Amara story line, the reveal that Stefan was Silas’ doppelgänger was a surprise. Up until this point, we thought it was only Elena, Katherine, Tatia, and Amara who had the doppelgänger line.

What we did know for sure was that no show in the history of time has used the word doppelgänger as much as The Vampire Diaries. This story line was the final straw in the endless parade of doppelgängers. May we all never use or hear this word again!
