19. Damon and Bonnie stuck in a 1994 prison world

After thinking Damon and Bonnie perished on the finale of Season 5, we were more than a little confused to find them eating breakfast and wearing flannel in the Salvatore kitchen. Turns out they were stuck in the 90’s. Literally!

Even more shocking than being trapped in a 1994 prison world, was the fact that their time alone (until Kai’s introduction) caused Damon and Bonnie to become best friends. For two characters always at odds, their sudden friendship was more than welcome.

20. Lily Salvatore is alive

The reappearance of Stefan and Damon’s mother, Lily, came out of nowhere. Once again, the writers rewrote the history within the show.

Instead of dying like her sons thought, Lily became a vampire and ended up in a prison world like Damon and Bonnie had. Her character was a bit polarizing, but one important factoid we learned was that Stefan got the Ripper gene from his mom.

21. Kai curses Elena and Bonnie

When it was announced Nina Dobrev would be leaving the show, viewers wondered how Elena would be written out. Of course the writers would leave Elena’s fate in the hands of the guy who had way too much fun for his own good.

Kai was a phenomenal villain and the only worthy successor to Klaus’ reign of terror. By putting Elena into a deep slumber and linking her life to Bonnie’s, the remainder of the series was set in motion. As long as Bonnie lived, Elena would stay asleep.

22. Caroline is pregnant with Alaric and Jo’s twins

Okay, this story line is still weird no matter how much time has passed. After Kai murdered Alaric’s fiancé, Jo, with their unborn babies still in her womb, all hope seemed lost. That is until those twins popped up inside Caroline’s womb.

The writers had to accommodate Candice King’s real-life pregnancy. This development brought about Alaric’s unrequited feelings for Caroline and her embracing her role as a mom.

23. Bonnie and Enzo become a couple

There were no warning signs or hints that this romantic pairing was coming. Once the timeline jumped ahead three years, Bonnie and Enzo were no longer enemies, but head over heels in love.

In a short period of time, Bonenzo became a force to be reckoned with and their devotion to one another was intense. Bonnie finally got an exciting love interest and some happiness of her own for once.

24. Stefan kills Enzo/Bonnie forces the cure into Stefan

Working for the Devil isn’t easy, so the only way Stefan could cope was to turn off his humanity. Unfortunately, it didn’t end well, and he turned back into Ripper Stefan.

After so much mayhem and death, the final straw for Bonnie was watching Stefan kill Enzo right in front of her. Her only defense rested in the cure she had ready in a syringe. Stefan becoming human changed everything going forward.
