7. Klaus turns Tyler into a hybrid

Tyler’s journey to self-discovery (e.g. accepting himself as a werewolf), took an unexpected turn when Klaus decided to use him as leverage to fix his hybrid problem. Tyler managed to survive the ordeal, but he was forever changed.

This moment also began the feud between Klaus and Tyler. First as master and slave. Then as rivalries over Caroline’s heart.

8. Evil Alaric

For someone who first came to town hunting down the vampire he thought killed his wife, Alaric sure did find himself knee-deep in mystical drama. Alaric seemed the least likely to turn into an epic villain.

Well at least he was for a few episodes after Esther transformed him into an Original vampire so he could kill her children. Alaric’s mega-vampire persona died shortly after, but as per usual… he didn’t stay dead for long.

9. Kill an Original, kill their entire sire line

Esther sure didn’t win any mother of the year awards, right? Not only were we clued into the fact that an Original could be killed via the white oak stake, but once they were dead, their entire sire line would die too.

This tidbit was important for two reasons. The first reason being that this added to the mythology of vampirism. The second reason is that this secured Klaus’ fate on the series. If he died, then Stefan, Damon, Caroline, and Elena would all die with him.

10. Damon met Elena first

As Season 3 came to a close, Elena picked Stefan over Damon after struggling with her growing feelings for Damon. Elena made the off-handed comment that maybe things would have been different had she met Damon first.

Well it turns out that’s exactly what had happened, only Elena had no memory of it. Her encounter with Damon was erased from her mind because he didn’t want anyone to know about his arrival in Mystic Falls yet.

11. Elena dies with vampire blood in her system

While the move to turn Elena into a vampire wasn’t exactly surprising, it was the entire series of events leading up to the big reveal. Rebekah forced Matt and Elena off the Wickery Bridge and into the water below where her parents had died only a couple of years prior.

Forcing Stefan to save Matt before her, Elena drowned just like her parents did. No one, including Elena, knew she had vampire blood in her system courtesy of Doctor Meredith. Elena’s death and transformation marked the closing of one chapter and the beginning of a new one.

12. Elena is sired to Damon

As Elena came to grips with her life as a vampire, she found herself getting closer to Damon. It didn’t take long after her split with Stefan to give into her feelings for Damon.

In a move that frustrated many Delena shippers, it was revealed Elena was “sired” to Damon. This meant she did everything and anything he asked because it was her sole desire to make him happy. Thankfully for those Delena shippers, Elena’s feelings were very much real despite the sire bond.
