Shadowhunters: Top Moments from “By the Light of Dawn” (Season 2 Episode 10)

Reviews, Shadowhunters

Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 10, “By the Light of Dawn,” is, in my opinion, the best episode throughout the entire season.

Going into the finale I didn’t have high hopes with the way some storylines were playing out, but I was not disappointed.

Here are my top moments of “By the Light of Dawn.”

SHADOWHUNTERS - "By The Light Of Dawn" - Valentine’s plan is in full effect and the Shadowhunters must act fast to save the Downworld in “By the Light of Dawn,” the spring finale of “Shadowhunters,” airing MONDAY, MARCH 6 (8:00 – 9:01 p.m. EST), on Freeform. (Freeform/John Medland)

Madzie and Dot’s Rescue

Dot has been held hostage, experimented on, and tortured by Valentine for far too long. Now that she is free of his captivity and safe with Magnus I want her to rest and gather her strength. Dot has been through so much that it’s going to take some time for her to adjust again.

As for Madzie, my hope is that she stays with Magnus since her mother is being dealt with by the clave. Madzie is so young, but she’s already such a strong warlock, and that’s something that needs to be controlled.

She needs to be taught control, but she also needs to be taught that not everyone is out to hurt her like Valentine did. Magnus would be the best teacher for her.

Raphael Coming Out and The End of Rizzy

The reveal of someone coming out is something that I’ve been looking forward to since the beginning of the season. Having accurate asexual representation on screen isn’t something that you see on an average basis.

I’m going to be honest right now, I am happy that they made Raphael canon asexual, but I am worried at the same time. I hope with every fiber of my being that they do this justice and don’t push it to the side.

Now that’s it’s been introduced, and it’s something that isn’t represented on other shows very much I don’t want it to be pushed to the background. I don’t want it to be mentioned in two episodes, and then that be it.

Speaking of Raphael, I am so ecstatic that this fling between him and Izzy is over. It’s been a toxic ship since the beginning and upsets me that it even went this far. I cannot see why people like them together when it’s because of drugs.

Now that Izzy has officially broken it off I want to see her healing and growing in Season 2B. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that she was there to save Alec and Aldertree’s butts, but she needs to rest. She needs to worry about getting rid of the Yin Fen in her body and ease back into the shadowhunter business.

Jace’s Redemption

Jace, from the beginning, has put himself through physical, emotional, and mental torture all because he thought he was Valentine’s son. He thought that nothing good could ever come about for him because of the fact.

I have never read the books, and never will, so I didn’t know the truth about whether or not he and Clary were brother and sister. I didn’t look up spoilers, but I’ve always had a hunch that Valentine couldn’t be his father.

Now that he knows he isn’t Valentine’s son, he doesn’t have demon blood, and he isn’t Clary’s brother I hope he can go back to himself. I know that’s going to be an insane task, but he has to try to with as much as he’s put himself through.

Also, this may be because I don’t like Climon, but I want Jace and Clary to be together. I don’t like that Clary and Simon became a thing only for a love triangle to be set up. It’s so obvious that that’s the only reason they ended up together.

Simon Being a Daylighter

Simon is one of the best things about Shadowhunters, and though his storyline may have been a bit hazy in the beginning, I’m happy with the way it ended up. You know, besides the whole Climon ordeal.

I’m not going to lie, I’ve always wanted Jace and Simon to be best friends and hang out and do stuff together. We’ve seen some of that, but now that Jace is the one who has given Simon the ability to walk in the sun I want to see more of it.

I want to see the new bond that grows between Simon and Jace after Simon fed off of him. I know that it won’t be as strong as a parabatai bond, but I want to see it there. We are all aware that it’s there for the both of them.

Simon being able to walk in the daylight is going to change everything.

Magnus and Alec Admitting Their Love

I am not afraid to confess that I cried when Alec says “I love you.”

This is the first real relationship for Alec, and he’s been taking it slow, but the thought of Magnus being dead absolutely torn him apart and made him realize just how committed he is.

I know that some people think that we’ve gotten too much Malec this season, but I believe we haven’t seen enough. This episode satisfied me in this department because it isn’t something over the top. It’s sweet and caring.

It’s not just a kiss, Alec pulling Magnus into the biggest bear hug ever shows just how sad he got when he thought that Magnus was gone. This is real love between the both of them.

This is something that I want to see more of in Season 2B. I want to see them having conversations for more than three minutes, I want to see them kissing, I want to see it all. If we have to watch it with the straight ships of the show, then we should be allowed to see it between the gay couple on the show.

The only thing that I disliked about the Malec interaction is that it is so short, but I won’t complain too much because we got quality content.

Other Thoughts:

  1. I’m not sure if giving us a backstory on Aldertree is supposed to make us feel sorry for him or what, but he can still die.
  2. Was that Sebastian at the very end with the soul sword??
  3. I’m ready for Luke to be more involved with the pack in Season 2B.
  4. Valentine is too keen to keep as a prisoner. I feel like this is going to have a bad turnout
