Reviews, The Mick

The plot finally moves forward a bit on The Mick Season 1 Episode 6, “The Master” by giving us an update on the Pemberton’s parents.

After two weeks of dealing with Ben’s reaction to being abandoned, the older kids finally get a shot to deal with their feelings while Ben deals with this week’s brand of neglect.  The youngest is left to wander the house watching a string of disturbing movies from A Clockwork Orange to The House of 1,000 Corpses.

When Chad gets a butt-dial from his mom and dad, he and Sabrina start to grapple with the fact that their parents have left and have made no real efforts to contact them. Sabrina is angry, but Chad is ready to search for them.

Micky, however, has no interest in their drama.  She’s too busy trying to find something to wear for her boat date with the guy she just dumped Jimmy for (much to Alba’s delight).

Mickey meets Teddy — a wealthy Greenwich heir — on his yacht for their first date and makes an ass of herself after chugging medicine to combat her sea sickness.  It turns out Mickey can’t handle all drugs as well as she can handle sleeping pills.

Kaitlin Olson is nailing her performance each and every week, but it’s great to see her get to dial up the physical comedy in this episode.

She is fantastic when playing drunk, making her scenes on the yacht — particularly her interactions with the fish they eat — hilarious.

Calra Jiminez also has a great episode. We really get a chance to see Alba shine in her efforts to help Mickey win back Teddy.

Her failed attempts to make Mickey seem alluring by describing Mickey’s lady parts as resembling the neck of a turkey are great, but the best Alba moments are when she gets to play with her sexuality.

After seeing the way she describes sealing the deal to Mickey, it is clear that when she finally gets her own romantic storyline, she’s going to tear some dude apart.

Things go awry with Teddy when he finally comes back into the Pemberton home just as tensions hit an all-time high with Chad and Sabrina.  The kids are having a full-blown fight and Teddy becomes a casualty – taking a stiletto to the eye.

And this is when Ben enters fresh off of his horror movie binge.  Jack Stanton’s performance can be cloying at times, but creepy-Ben is always welcome.  He shines in small doses, particularly when it seems he wandered off the set of Children of the Corn.

Watching him happily pluck the shoe from Teddy’s eye is one of the actor’s top moments in the show so far – second only to his disturbing interactions with his stuffed unicorn last week.

When Chad and Sabrina finally make nice, he brings the phone out to the authorities who are looking for his parents.

It’ll be interesting to see how things play out once  Chris and Poodle are back in the mix.

Stray Observations

  • This exchange:
Chad: There’s nothing more suspicious than a man who can’t live on land.
Mickey: Well, I’ll make do. Jimmy used to live in her car
Sabrina: Bum to a pirate, you’re really moving up in the world.
  • This statement says so much about being a woman:
I was young and dumb but I’m not that anymore. Now I’m old and wise.  Nope, not old.  I’m wise…and young and hot.
  • Of course Mickey is using a flip phone to take a picture of her fancy spaghetti.

What did you think of this episode of The Mick?

Alien or Aliens? Are you happy to have Jimmy and his smells back in the picture or would you rather see Mickey on the dating scene? Did seeing Kaitlin Olson drunk on a boat make anyone else want her to whip out her spot-on inflatable tube man impression?
