Conviction Review: Enemy Combatant (Season 1 Episode 12)

Conviction, Reviews

The man, the myth, the legend: Hayes’ father.

Conviction Season 1 Episode 12, “Enemy Combatant,” finally gives viewers a look into Hayes’ relationship with her father.

Hayes’ relationship with her dad is sort of like her relationship with her mother — unless they want something she doesn’t ever see them. The introduction of Hayes’ dad is, to me, a big letdown. From the talks between Hayes and her mother, it seemed as if her father was the better, more understanding parent. That’s not the case.

When Ted, Hayes’ dad, shows up my suspicions are already at an all-time high. Why show up now?

Throughout the entire season, we’ve heard limited information about Ted other than that he’s always super busy and seems to take Hayes’ side in whatever big fight she and her mother have. That’s it.

Now, we know that Ted Morrison is nothing but trouble.

From the very first moment we see him to the very last, he’s causing tension and corruption. The first thing he does? Meddle in Hayes’ relationship.

Aggravation sets in as I watch Ted pry into Hayes and Wallace’s love life. Move on buddy; she’s a grown adult who can make her own decisions.

Hayes and Wallace’s relationship is already in a rough position, even if they don’t want to admit it. The last thing that they need is for Hayes’ father to show up and try to break them up again.

Wallace’s comeback to Ted is by far the best thing from the episode. “Sir, Hayes is not the same woman she was when she left Chicago, or even just a few months ago.”

Wallace is right; Hayes isn’t the same woman. She isn’t that wild, unashamed, hectic woman she was when she first joined the CIU. She isn’t the same woman who lived in Chicago with Wallace, which Ted would know that if he ever showed his face.

You can tell that Ted doesn’t take Hayes seriously by the way he treats her in front of everyone else. You don’t undermine and call your daughter silly little nicknames in front of all of her employees if you think what she is doing is important.

On top of everything he’s done so far, he only came back to use Hayes to crack the case because there was another job opening that he wanted. He used her just to get a new job.

I hope that Hayes shuts Ted out of her mind and ignores everything he says to her about her relationship with Wallace. And while she’s at it, she can just forget about him as well because she doesn’t need him.

“Enemy Combatant” ends on a low note for Wallace and Hayes, setting up, what looks to be, a wild season finale.

Other Thoughts:

  • Every time Ted calls Hayes “bug” I die a little bit inside for her.
  • When Hayes offers nudes in exchange for information, I laugh so hard. It seems so far out there, but in this world that’s something that someone would do.
  • I’m starting to like Sam a little, too bad it’s the episode right before the finale.
  • Now that the show is ending will we finally get that spin-off of Maxine? Please and thanks.
