20 Favorite TV Couples from 2016
This year, television was filled with a variety of romances that captivated the hearts of viewers.
Some of these relationships burned brightly and beautifully before they were extinguished, others are just beginning their own journey. And some have faced the worst and come out stronger together.
From the tragic and heartbreaking to the delightful and hopeful, here are our favorite TV couples from 2016!
1. Marcus Kane and Abby Griffin (The 100)

These two are easily my personal favorite couple of the past year. Arguably one of the best slow burn romances in all of television, this relationship is entirely earned.
The pair started out as staunch antagonists with an abundance of chemistry, but their relationship has evolved into one filled with love and trust and above all, hope. In a show where people rarely ever get to be happy for long, it’s been refreshing to see Kane and Abby create something precious and beautiful to hang on to.
2. Alex Danvers and Maggie Sawyer (Supergirl)

Alex and Maggie’s relationship is brand new, but it’s one of the most important ones on television this year. Meeting Maggie helped Alex to begin her own journey with understanding, accepting, and embracing her sexuality.
Alex’s coming out story is the best one I’ve ever seen on television. Maggie’s realization that being happy with Alex is more important than letting fear hold her back had fans cheering at the Supergirl Season 2 mid-season finale. We can’t wait to see where this relationship goes in 2017.
Maggie: Life is too short, we should be who we are and we should kiss the girls we want to kiss. And I want to kiss you.
3. Root and Shaw (Person of Interest)

These two met a tragic end this year, but thanks to the open-ended nature of the show, there’s room for fans to believe that Root was never really dead after all.
Root never gives up on finding Shaw, and after everything she went through, Shaw found solace in one thing, Root. These two never stop fighting for each other.
They showed us that home can be a person and taught us that “if we’re all just noise in the system, we might as well be a symphony.” I choose to believe they’re still out there, keeping the world safe one number at a time.
4. Norma Bates and Alex Romero (Bates Motel)

Anyone who knows anything about the movie Psycho, knew that Norma Bates would not live to see the end of this series. But anyone who’s watched the previous three seasons of Bates Motel, didn’t expect her to get a chance to be truly happy either.
And yet, for the first time in her life, at the end of her life, Norma found the most loving and healthy relationship she ever experienced, with Alex. Though her death was truly devastating, their romance was filled with a pure happiness that everyone deserves to find.
Norma: It’s funny, you and I. Isn’t it? That we’re here and we’re happy. That after everything we’ve made it.
5. Rainbow and Andre Johnson (Black-ish)

Raising four kids and holding down successful careers isn’t always easy, but Bo and Dre make it all seem 100% worth it. These two are my favorite married couple on television right now.
There’s no power imbalance between the two of them, and Dre is the punchline of as many or more jokes, as Bo. They’re fantastic parents, they struggle, they laugh, and they love their kids and each other more than anything. And now they’ve got a new baby on the way! I’ve got nothing but love for this delightful duo.
6. Clarke Griffin and Lexa (The 100)

Lexa’s death was one of the most tragic events of television this year. Clarke’s love for Lexa will forever live in infamy; their complex relationship meant so much to young queer girls all over the world.
They learned from each other and overcame betrayals and disagreements, to find a bit of light in the darkness. These two girls with the weight of the world on their shoulders showed us that life should be about more than just surviving, and told us that the ones who love us never truly leave us.

Emma and Hook!!!
Emma Swan and Killian Hook
Emma and Hook completely invalidated this entire list. The poor girls who romanticize that. I truly hope they get help and don’t get stuck with a man like Hook.
^ again totally ignoring all else to have a shipping tantrum as usual. the only person who in the show who is big problem is rumple and what he has done to belle
LOL nothing says romance like trying to kill your so called significant other and her parents. Craptain Yawn. I did agree with most of the other relationships on here though.
^ guess what he didnt, he broke through his dark one curse, as shown on the episode. He did that himself even with the evilest darkness in him. Thats the biggest difference.
Rumple has ALL the DO inside him and still never tried to kill the people he loves.
Rumple tried to kill Henry to save his own life in season 2.
Yeah to the first place. And a big fat NO THANK YOU to Emma and Hook
Count me among those who really, really don’t see Hook & Emma as the best or most worthy ship from Once Upon A Time to make a best-of list, but agree with most of the other couples. Really good to see Luke Cage and This is Us on the your list. I feel like both shows tend to get ignored a lot since they’re not typical… shipper shows, I guess. And Kane/Abby and Clarke/Lexa were my favorite relationships on The 100 too!
Lexa et clarke beautiful
Henry and Elizabeth McCord from Madam Secretary <3 OTP of all OTP's!
Steroline is my favorite one
Emma and Hook are disgusting and ruined OUAT lmao
YASSS! All my gay reps made it! Thank you for this article ?
!!!! Yay Captain swan the only ones I care about! They are so pure and beautiful. ??
Emma and Hook is one of the best relationships on the show, aside from Snow and Charming. They support each other, bring out the best in each other, and their love is so beautiful.
Hook tried to kill her whole family, only Emma went to the Underworld for him. The rest went for her as they said onscreen multiple times. Worst pairing ever since Spuffy.
