Frequency Review: Deviation (Season 1 Episode 6)

On Frequency Season 1 Episode 6, “Deviation,” Raimy meets another guy who communicates with someone in a different time. Of course, Carl is a murderer and a crazy person, whereas Raimy is not.

I feel like red flags should have gone up a lot sooner. The fact that Carl communicates with himself in the future is big red flag. While talking to your dad in 1996 is weird, talking to yourself in the future is crazy.

Am I the only one who feels this way? I feel like if he talked to a family member or literally anyone but himself, I would have believed him.

Carl: I talk to myself.

Raimy: Shocker.

Carl: In the future.

I don’t know about you, but I believe that Carl is just insane. He is able to provide Raimy with some science, which makes her feel better, but he’s pretty much just hearing a voice inside his head telling him to kill. He does not offer any kind of proof.

Raimy seems to be on the same page, but she still listens to him. This is what is concerning. She tells Frank to murder the Nightingale — MURDER.

Yes, okay, initially it is great that Raimy does not write Carl off. She considers both sides, which a good detective should do. But then, she knows he is crazy and listens to him anyways. Why, Raimy, why?

Maybe Raimy is being so drastic because her mother’s life is on the line here, but Raimy seems to have abandoned all cop-like thinking. Frank still believes and clings to the way things are supposed to work — the police arrest the bad guy, and the bad guy goes to jail for life. Raimy needs to get a grip.

The Nightingale case is getting a lot more interesting, especially since the Nightingale seems to be calling out the Sullivans. Satch tells Raimy that Frank thought that the Nightingale was sending him messages, setting up crime scenes to make a point.

Considering the repeating clip of Raimy on the news and the family photo in Amanda’s hands, it looks like Frank was right about the Nightingale sending messages. The question becomes did this all start with Frank getting too close, or is the Nightingale somehow aware of the magical HAM radio?

It’s a little coincidental that the same “day” Frank saves Amanda, Raimy finds her dead in 2016. If Amanda died 3 episodes from now, then it would not be as suspicious. It’s like the Nightingale knows he was robbed of a kill. Like Satch says, why would the Nightingale kill Amanda 20 years later?

Finally, Daniel and Raimy are starting to become shipworthy. They have so many cute moments in this episode. Sure, Raimy does come off like a creeper on the subway, but unlike previous encounters, Daniel isn’t super angry, and Raimy isn’t unbelievably awkward.

Raimy: Do you believe in kismet? Like some things are meant to be?

If Carl isn’t completely crazy and his theory that the branch always grows back is correct, then maybe the branch also applies to Raimy and Daniel’s relationship. Saving her dad may have cut off the branch, but now it could be growing back. What do you think? Do you want to see more of Raimy and Daniel together?

What did you think of this episode of Frequency? Did anyone else roll their eyes at the reveal that Frank cheated on Julie while undercover? I mean why did we have to throw that drama into the mix?
