Frequency Review: The Near Far Problem (Season 1 Episode 3)
Can I be brutally honest here? Frequency Season 1 Episode 3 “The Near Far Problem” put me to sleep. Okay so I have been up since 5:30, but still, this hour is a total snooze fest.
There’s nothing exciting about watching Raimy wait around for Frank to do something and for the future to change. There’s also nothing exciting about watching Frank follow Raimy’s orders and not think for himself.
The procedural element is not working here.
Raimy and Frank need to do some actual police work on their own. Raimy locates Mrs. Groff by looking at property taxes, but we do not actually see this detective work play out. All we see is her complain to Gordo about going through years of taxes, so we are told that police work has happened and is apparently happening. That does not cut it.
Frank’s police work involves him following Raimy’s orders. The closest we get to seeing him do some actual work is interviewing Maya. Boring.
Oh my god, can we talk about how Maya suspected and even asked Thomas if he was the Nightingale killer? Why would you, a person being held captive, mention your suspicion to your captor?
Also, like Frank said, Maya does not fit the Nightingale’s MO, so why would she assume Thomas is the Nightingale? It does not make sense.
We do not need further “proof” or suspicion that Thomas is the Nightingale killer. We have too much already to where it is super obvious that it isn’t true and that Thomas is a whole different beast.

Another issue with the procedural element is that Raimy keeps being portrayed as a terrible detective.
She almost kills Thomas! I am actually still in shock that she is willing to go that far.
Raimy is obviously still reeling from her mother’s death and is fighting to bring her back, but that is no excuse. She should not be working if she cannot get her head on straight.
As a detective, you cannot abuse your power because you are having a bad day or because you have a personal connection to the case you are working on. Your badge means you are held to a higher standard, and if you cannot separate your personal feelings from the job, then you should not do the job.
Hopefully, Frank’s talk at the end will put Raimy in check. It is really awful that she basically blames him for not keeping her in check. Girl, keep yourself in check. Do not put that on your dad.
Sorry to say but it is going to take a lot of convincing for me to believe that Raimy should be a detective. Right now, I’m not seeing how she got the job.
Stray musings/mini rants:
- Gordo is an amazing friend that Raimy does not deserve. He’s my favorite character.
- Daniel and Raimy are still really, really, boring.
- The pilot was actually really good. What happened?
