The Originals Review: No More Heartbreaks (Season 3 Episode 19)

Reviews, The Originals

The Originals episode title, “No More Heartbreaks,” is a lie. There is plenty of heartbreak and sorrow that ends with two tragic deaths.

Cami is gone forever and is given a tribute worthy of her, despite Lucien’s malicious intent. And Davina is just beginning her afterlife now that she’s with the Ancestors.

Let’s dive right in and talk about it!

Thinking about Cami’s death leads to a confusing batch of feelings. On one hand her death can be understood. It’s a natural progression in the grand scheme of things. Looking back on her time on The Originals, it’s easy to tell that she was being built up on an altar to only fall when the time comes.

Cami was always meant to inspire, love, and care for those around her. This is especially true when it comes to Klaus Mikaelson. Their relationship was a challenging back and forth to teach Klaus that he is loved, bad parts included, and that a good man still exists under all that anger.

Now, he’s to take all of her teachings and hold them close, as the final battle with Lucien rears it’s ugly head. With Cami in mind, he will use the power of love for his family and friends to destroy those who are trying to kill them. She is the singular moment in Klaus’ life that can change him for the betterment of his daughter, his siblings, the mother of his child, and his home of New Orleans.

On another hand, Cami’s death is unwarranted. She was on a path of self discovery as a vampire. Cami was coming to terms with her love for Klaus, how she was never going to escape the supernatural, and her family’s legacy. Not to mention there was bonding and training with Hayley. She could’ve inspired Klaus, to use the power of love, by his side. Instead she dies to progress someone else’s storyline.

Why is it such a common trope for the woman to die to advance someone else, primarily a man? Why can’t they stay together and face the world as one? Because it’s tragic and makes us swoon for the tragic male hero.

Surprise, writers, viewers can swoon just as much with a strong woman by the male hero’s side. There is no need for sacrificing someone on the cusp of discovering life’s mysteries. If not for Cami’s tragic and sob inducing death, we would’ve had a chance to watch her exploring the world. Maybe with Klaus by her side.

In the end it is easier for the writers to write her off than giving her a chance to reach her full potential.

Davina’s death feels like a sucker punch to the throat right after Cami’s death. The anger that the Ancestors have against Davina is so great that they were willing to wait till Kol snapped to have their revenge. It’s a cruel twist of fate that the one she’s been fighting to bring back to life is the one who ends up killing her in the end.

Like others on The Originals, Davina is stuck in this perpetual roller coaster of angst that will not stop until she leaves New Orleans. There’s no doubt that this witch will return, the preview for next week’s episode pretty much confirms it. What’s different is that she will face the women of her witch-line, that once protected her.

Punishing Davina for working with vampires makes the Ancestors a bunch of hypocrites. She works with vampires to help her friends. It’s a partnership born out of love. What the ancestors are doing is born out of hate and jealousy. Davina has everything they don’t; life, love and friends who would do anything for her. These friends and family just happen to go bump in the night and drink blood.

It seems like one mistake as Regent, coupled with her relationships with non-witches, is too much for the judgemental Ancestors. They’ve turned their backs on one of their own instead of helping her like they’re meant to.

What comes next is a toss up between what we expect and what can change. Klaus is known for letting his anger ruin everything. But Cami’s death is too big for him to brush it off. Maybe this is his moment to shine and prove Lucien wrong. As for Davina, Kol will do everything in his power to get her back. It’s time for him to repay her loyalty and love. Let’s just hope he gets to her before the Ancestors tear her apart.

The Originals airs Fridays at 9/8c on The CW.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.
