The Catch Review: The Real Killer (Season 1 Episode 2)

Reviews, The Catch

The second episode of The Catch, “The Real Killer,” is every bit as entertaining as the show’s series premiere — maybe even more so.

Perhaps the worst part of the fact that Alice was conned by her own fiance is that now she is questioning herself. Though the underlying story is about her figuring out who Christopher Hall really is, she’s still a private investigator with cases to solve.

And this participate case-of-the-week manages to hit her right where it hurts. Of course, after having been tricked by the man she loves herself, she feels certain the man sitting in her office isn’t someone who should be trusted either. Her gut tells her the guy really didn’t commit the murder, and she wants to prove it. She wants to know that she’s still good at her job despite having let herself fall victim to a scam.

Meanwhile, we get to see Ben (a.k.a. Christopher Hall) working his charms to pull off more cons. It starts with the simple stuff, since he and Margot are desperate for money after having been conned by Alice. It’s so much fun to watch him stealing in the jewelry store. This is the easy stuff for him, and he pulls it all off in large part because of his personality.

Their entire team comes back with all kinds of expensive jewelry, and they even talk about how this is the sort of thing they all did when they started out.

The relationship between Ben and Margot is something else we get to see more of in this episode, and to say it’s complicated would be an understatement. Margot admits to feeling jealous over Alice, and Ben keeps secret the fact that he’s more in love with Alice than he is with Margot.

Margot even mentions that they could have the kind of relationship Ben had with Alice. They could run away together and settle down, but both of them agree they wouldn’t last. They both need the action and the excitement of the life they’re in now, even though for Ben, it seems like it means settling for a woman he doesn’t really want to be with.

But apparently, that’s what he has to do to protect Alice, which is yet another way this whole thing becomes complicated.

Who knew that Ben / Christopher would so quickly become a character we’d have compassion for, feel invested in, and even feel a little sorry for?

Part of that has to be because he’s so open about his feelings, to Reggie at least. The other part of it is that charm, which he uses to his advantage to convince the princess to stay in Los Angeles.

THE CATCH - "The Real Killer" - Alice and the team take on a very public client, a husband who was wrongly imprisoned for murdering his wife. Alice, however, is distracted with a mission of her own: track down Ben and figure out his next move. Meanwhile, Ben, Margot and Reggie are in desperate need of cash since Alice foiled their last plan, and the three con artists set their sights on a new target, on "The Catch," THURSDAY, MARCH 31 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT) on the ABC Television Network. A good-looking gentleman with a fancy car whose first move is to empower a woman? Come on. Who could resist that?

As fun and upbeat as this show feels, the shock factor is clearly also something we can expect on The Catch. I mean, there’s nothing like being at the scene of a murder to shake things up a bit. And from the previews, it looks like we’re in for even more surprises with next week’s episode.
