The Vampire Diaries Review: I Would For You (Season 7 Episode 15)

Reviews, The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries has finally caught up to its future!

This week’s episode, entitled “I Would For You” answers a whole lot of unanswered questions we’ve been seeing in the flash-forward.

It may not be the absolute best episode of the season, but it does its job in bridging the time gap, and we can now see why so many of our favorite characters are so distraught in the future.

The first being Caroline.

You would think that since it’s taken six seasons to get these two together, that they may be in it for the long haul. But no. In this week’s episode, Stefan decides to stay away from Caroline. Sure his reasons are noble, but I just don’t understand why he still has to. The idea of leaving loved ones behind is not one that has been explored much on The Vampire Diaries, so it gives me a weird feeling when Stefan decides to just leave the girl he claims to love, behind, because of a simple threat on his life.

Is that why Caroline is so upset in the future — to the point that she never wants to hear his name again? Because Stefan never came to Dallas? Because he left? Does he not tell her that he’s leaving her because the babies may be in danger? Does he just completely ignore her — like in true Stefan season 6 fashion? Because I can see how a girl may take that to heart.

Speaking of taking things to heart, Damon decides to desiccate in a coffin until Elena wakes up- which means he leaves Bonnie behind.

Probably the best scene of the episode is Bonnie telling Damon it’s not okay for him to do this.

Bonnie: I am not okay with this decision. I am not okay with your choosing yourself. And I’m not okay with never seeing you- my best friend, ever again. This hurts… This hurts me. And as you desiccate and as you feel the pains of hunger — as the blood drains from your body, that’s what I want you to remember. That you hurt me. You don’t get to say goodbye.

There was a point in this show that I didn’t care much for Bonnie. She seemed more like a plot device than a character, but the writers have taken the time to develop her friendship with Damon and turn her into a completely kickass witch. So to see her so heartbroken isn’t a shock. And again, no matter how honorable Damon’s decision is, I just cannot get behind it.

A part of me thinks that this could be the reason we see Bonnie so distraught in the future. Does not getting to say goodbye to Damon mess her up to the point she needs to go to AA meetings? I could believe it.

While this episode finally gets us up to speed, it also makes some questionable choices in terms of character development. I’m not sure I even like the idea of having all my favorite vampires not together. It’s a bit like life, I suppose; when everyone grows up and starts to move again and do their own thing, but this seemed forced. These characters always have each others’ backs, and its almost seems unnatural to not have them all in the same place- helping each other with their problems, and you know — not kicking them out of their homes! (Ahem, Matt!)

Hopefully within the next couple of episodes, we’ll see our Scooby gang reunite. Until then, we can only hope that they come to their senses, and realize they’re stronger together, than apart.

Things to think about:

  • Did Klaus give Stefan pointers on how to entice Caroline? That promise he made about Europe and seeing the world sounded quite familiar
  • Still wondering why Bonnie makes out with Enzo in the future. Is it because he reminds her of Damon? Or because she’s actually attracted to him?
  • I honestly do not care about anything Matt Donovan ever does. Do you?

  • Love this review, thank you! Totally agree with you about that Bonnie/Damon scene, it was just heartwrenching. Poor Bonnie. Now she knows what it’s like to be on the other side of one of those self-sacrificing decisions that someone else makes to protect you, that you have no say in. She’s been the self-sacrificer of that set-up so many times. So she maybe needs that, but it’s still so hard to watch, and Kat did an amazing job.

  • Are you still writing reviews on TVD? I noticed there haven’t been any for the last episodes, which is shame. Please continue with your reviews as soon as you’re able 🙂
